Job Description

Ochsner Health is seeking a registered nurse to serve as the school nurse at West Jefferson High School in New Orleans. In this full-time position, you will provide comprehensive nursing care to students within a school system setting, using the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate student health needs. You will ensure the health, comfort, and safety of students while administering nursing care under school system guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Administer nursing care within the school system framework, guided by the Nurse Practice Act, ANA Code for Nurses, and Scope & Standards of Practice
  • Apply the nursing process in the delivery of student care
  • Assess learning needs and implement teaching strategies appropriate for the diverse needs of students, families, and other groups or disciplines
  • Use data, information, and knowledge to evaluate and promote change in order to achieve optimal outcomes
  • Participate in the implementation and evaluation of student care plans
  • Adapt behavior and communication to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy, appropriate methods of introduction, and clear explanation of services or procedures
  • Remain knowledgeable on current federal, state, and local laws, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements that apply to school nursing
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and standards
  • Report any known or suspected unethical or questionable behaviors, patient or employee safety concerns, or privacy violations
  • Perform other related duties as required

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
  • Current registered nurse (RN) license in Louisiana
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing

Physical and Environmental Demands

This position requires exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue. You will work in a patient care area, work directly with students, and may work with specimens that could contain communicable diseases. There is occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases. The position may involve occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning, and disposal of contaminated waste.

The physical demands of this position include exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
