This is an Earn to Learn Program position for nursing students enrolled in the VWCC RN Program. As an RN Extern, you will support patient care under supervision, assist clinical staff, and gain practical experience as part of your nursing education.
Clinical Setting
You will work at the Roanoke facility (1906 Belleview Ave SE) in a variable/flex employment arrangement with the ability to work any day and any shift.
Responsibilities
- Support nursing staff in delivering safe, compassionate patient care as part of the Earn to Learn program
- Observe, document, and communicate patient needs, concerns, and status changes to the healthcare team
- Provide emotional support, education, and guidance to patients and families under supervision
- Assist with basic patient care including activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulation, positioning, and skin care
- Obtain and record vital signs, weights, intake and output, pulse oximetry, and pain assessments
- Collect and process specimens and report abnormalities to the licensed nurse
- Perform delegated clinical tasks including blood glucose monitoring, EKGs (as applicable), oral suctioning, and incentive spirometry
- Assist with patient transport, admissions, discharges, and preparation for diagnostic procedures
- Support patient safety through rounding and monitoring needs such as pain, positioning, and personal items
- Maintain a clean and safe patient care environment and ensure proper equipment function
- Respond to patient call lights and communicate patient and family needs to appropriate staff
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and team communication as appropriate
- Support early mobility, fall prevention, and other patient safety initiatives
- Assist in emergency situations under the direction of the RN
- Participate in orientation, training, and competency development activities
- Provide feedback to peers and support a collaborative team environment
- Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development to provide age-appropriate care
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent education
- AHA BLS certification
