Temporary School Nurse

This temporary position provides school nursing services for students in an educational enrichment program (EEP). You will perform health assessments, administer medications and first aid, and coordinate care with physicians, parents, and school staff. The role is based in a school setting and runs approximately 6-12 weeks, working 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care

• Provide nursing and physical screening to students; assess students and implement first aid measures as needed
• Assume responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and referral activities for students after speaking with supervisor
• Counsel students concerning health concerns such as pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and substance use disorder to facilitate responsible decision-making
• Administer daily and PRN medications and nursing care procedures prescribed by students' physicians
• Initiate emergency procedures for students and staff as needed
• Assess ill students to determine whether they should be sent home and contact parents when necessary
• Monitor diabetic students and communicate specific diet requirements to food service personnel and staff
• Coordinate and attend meetings via Zoom during school hours between prescriber, parent, and student
• Work with clinical supervisor and on-site prescribers to communicate medication changes to parents and obtain medication refills

Record Keeping

• Maintain a daily log of all students seen, sent home, and parents contacted
• Maintain communication with students' physicians regarding medication
• Monitor health exclusions

Staff Support and Education

• Orient staff and teach specific medical procedures for evaluation and maintenance of medically involved students in their classrooms
• Present, train, and maintain appropriate standards from OSHA regarding contact with and possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious body materials within the school setting
• Provide updated health education to staff and students

Additional Duties

• Participate in staff meetings, conferences, training sessions, and workshops as assigned
• Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect
• Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Current Illinois Registered Nurse license
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
• Ability to work and interact with all school personnel and students in a cooperative, collaborative, and courteous manner
• Ability to build effective rapport with student population
• Effective organizational skills, time management, and flexibility to meet staff and students' needs
• Willingness to assume responsibilities appropriate for the position
