Hillsboro Medical Center is seeking a Surgical Technologist to join the Operating Room team. In this role, you will work as part of the surgical team, assisting nursing staff and physicians in providing safe and efficient care for patients undergoing surgical procedures. You will perform scrub duties across all surgical specialties, maintain the sterile field, pass instruments and supplies to surgical team members, and help prepare and equip surgical suites. This position may also include responsibilities for staff education, inventory management, vendor relationships, and administrative duties.
Responsibilities
- Perform scrub duties for all surgical specialties
- Maintain sterile technique and the sterile field during surgical procedures
- Pass instruments and supplies to surgical team members
- Acquire, prepare, and equip surgical suites
- Protect equipment from damage and report malfunctions to appropriate personnel
- Develop and maintain effective two-way communication with physicians, staff, and management
- Precept and train new scrub technologists and student technologists
- Inform appropriate personnel of changes to preference cards when requested by physicians
- Participate in new supply and equipment evaluation and implementation
- Attend staff meetings, in-services, and continuing education opportunities
- Participate in vendor monitoring and management according to department and hospital procedures
- Assist in non-surgical patient interventions under direct supervision of a physician or RN
- Serve as a Core Technician when assigned, maintaining sterile technique and providing supplies and instruments as requested
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from a nationally accredited surgical technologist educational program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES, OR completion of a surgical technologist training program in a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces or U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, OR practice of surgical technology for at least two years between January 1, 2014 and January 1, 2017 in a hospital, ambulatory surgical center, or as an employee of a federal government agency or institution
- National surgical certification by NBSTSA, JCAHPO, or NCCT within one year of graduation (if not eligible under armed forces training or prior practice pathways)
- American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS certification required within 90 days of hire
- Knowledge of sterile technique, operating room procedures, and equipment
- Knowledge of rules and regulations established by governmental and regulatory agencies
- Proper appearance and personal conduct appropriate for the position
- Effective communication skills including body language awareness, active listening, and ability to work with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Excellent customer service skills
- Technical proficiency with equipment and instrumentation used for surgical procedures
- Ability to follow correct procedures in unusual and emergent situations
- Knowledge of specialty procedures and associated instrumentation and equipment
- Effective management of supply utilization
- Ability to adjust promptly and calmly to changes in the work environment and perform well in emergency situations
- Proficiency with hospital computerized information and ordering systems
- Demonstration of aseptic technique principles in daily practice
Continuing Education
- If trained through armed forces or under the prior practice pathway, completion of 16 hours of continuing education every two years is required and will be tracked by the department
Preferred Qualifications
- Current national surgical certification by NBSTSA, JCAHPO, or NCCT
- Work experience in an operating room in a hospital or ambulatory surgical center
- Completion of a surgical technologist clinical rotation
- Bilingual skills
Compensation
- Pay range: $40.79/hr - $59.17/hr
