The opportunity

Job Description

As a Surgical Technologist II, you will assist in surgical operations under the direction of a licensed caregiver. You will perform technical duties in the operating room, including preparing surgical environments, arranging instruments, assisting surgeons during procedures, and ensuring smooth teamwork with registered nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare team members. You will provide care consistent with accreditation standards while maintaining competency in serving diverse patient populations including adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients.

Responsibilities

  • Perform first scrub role in a majority of surgical procedures
  • Prepare operating rooms for surgery and assist with room turnover
  • Arrange instruments according to procedure specifications, confirm proper function and sterilization, and maintain availability to avoid delays
  • Assist surgeons during surgery by passing instruments and sterile supplies, assisting with skin stapling, and operating ESU pedals
  • Perform intraoperative counts of instruments, sponges, and needles; label all medications
  • Prepare patients for surgery by washing and disinfecting incision sites and transporting patients to and from surgery
  • Demonstrate knowledge of equipment used in assigned areas, including care, handling, operations, troubleshooting, and safety precautions
  • Recognize equipment malfunctions and initiate repairs appropriately
  • Assemble, process, and maintain instruments relevant to assigned areas
  • Monitor and update inventory within assigned areas
  • Assist in storing and stocking supplies and maintain surgeon preference lists
  • Improve accuracy of patient identification using two identifiers when transporting patients between units or departments
  • Observe patients for fall risk and take action to prevent falls
  • Control and maintain perioperative environments including asepsis, electrical safety, waste management, and traffic patterns
  • Establish and maintain sterile fields
  • Maintain safe, clean, and organized environments
  • Reduce healthcare-acquired infection risk by complying with CDC hand washing guidelines and isolation policies
  • Perform preceptor role for surgical technology students and new hires; assist co-workers in orientation
  • Participate in department committees, unit in-services, and staff meetings to promote patient care and safety
  • Participate in the Medical Center's Performance Improvement Program

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Vocational or Technical Diploma with ability to verify on-the-job training from participating institution
  • Vocational or Technical Diploma with demonstrated independent performance in two specialties
  • Minimum 2 years of experience with surgical procedures
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST)
