High Point Medical Center's Surgery Department is seeking a Surgical Service Assistant to support operating room operations. In this full-time role, you will maintain the surgical environment, assist with patient care, and ensure efficient room preparation and turnover between procedures.
You will work 40 hours per week on a days schedule with on-call responsibilities. This position is benefits-eligible.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily environmental cleaning of all operating rooms according to established policies and procedures
- Assist in patient positioning, transfer, and transport as directed by clinical and medical staff
- Serve as courier for transport of specimens, equipment, and supplies to and from the hospital
- Assist with room preparation by retrieving necessary equipment for surgical cases
- Check proper function and safety of all equipment prior to use
- Gather and organize equipment needed for room setup
- Assist in case setups with essential equipment and supplies as directed by the circulating nurse
- Prepare room setup before and between surgical procedures
- Transport operative specimens as directed by the circulating nurse or charge nurse
- Utilize principles of safety and body mechanics when transferring, turning, moving, and lifting patients, obtaining assistance from other staff as needed
- Observe principles of sterile technique related to operative attire, sterile setups, draping, and movement within sterile areas
- Strictly adhere to Universal Precautions
- Keep the Unit Coordinator informed of any issues or concerns relating to a safe, clean surgical environment
- Recognize and follow appropriate supervisory channels for communication and problem-solving
- Promote a positive work environment with coworkers and other customers
- Participate with the RN using a team approach to plan and carry out daily work and room assignments
- Utilize time wisely during low patient census periods by completing quality assurance activities, restocking supplies, and cleaning activities
- Perform ongoing and annual self-assessment in relation to performance requirements
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and in-service education programs as patient census allows
- Participate in the lead SSA role as designated by management
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- CPR certification (BLS Course C) from the American Heart Association, or meet requirements for restricted CPR certification
- Successful completion of General Hospital Orientation
- Successful completion of specialty/subspecialty orientation
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to understand and follow directions
- Excellent interpersonal and computer skills
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more years of experience in a surgical setting
Physical Requirements
This position requires the ability to:
- Sit for extended periods
- Lift 10 pounds from waist to crown; lift or carry 50 pounds horizontally for 2 feet
- Push 70 pounds and pull 50 pounds
- Front carry 10 pounds for a distance of 150 feet
- Grip 50 pounds with each hand
- Forward bend in standing for 5 minutes
- Rotate in standing
- Repetitively squat, stoop, reach, and stand for 5 minutes
- Walk a distance of 300 feet
- Possess visual acuity to accurately read and document patient charts and observe patients
- Possess sense of smell for safety issues
- Possess sense of touch to evaluate patient vital signs
- Speak and hear effectively to communicate with patients, family members, physicians, and staff
- Demonstrate manual finger dexterity for writing, equipment operation, and positioning and moving patients
- Effectively manage a high-stress environment resulting from patient volume
Occupational Exposure
This position involves occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

- Full-time, 40 hours per week

Compensation and Benefits
- Pay Range: $19.80 - $29.70 per hour
- Base compensation within the listed pay range based on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, and training
