Supervising Public Health Nurse, Bureau of School Health

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Division of Family and Child Health, is seeking a Supervising Public Health Nurse for the Bureau of School Health. This position provides clinical supervision and administrative leadership for nursing and paraprofessional staff within the Office of School Health (OSH), ensuring the health and well-being of students and contributing to a healthier, safer school environment.

Note: This position is only available to permanent employees currently holding the civil service title of Public Health Nurse.

Clinical Setting

The Office of School Health serves students across New York City schools. You will work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team including Supervising Medical Doctors, vision specialists, mental health professionals, and other OSH team members to plan and implement health initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Provide assignments and schedules for nursing and paraprofessional staff
• Conduct site visits to schools to provide clinical supervision of nurses, advisors, and assistants
• Utilize the Automated Student Health Record (ASHR) system to generate reports
• Analyze data from OSH management reports, including walk-ins, case management, and special projects
• Conduct in-service trainings and plan staff development activities
• Participate in recruitment and orientation of new staff
• Participate in disciplinary activities as needed
• Monitor inventory of medical supplies and equipment within assigned areas
• Collaborate with the OSH team to plan initiatives within assigned areas
• Serve on emergency teams on call for bioterrorism attacks and other emergencies as directed by the Commissioner of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from a regionally-accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department
• Active license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State (must be maintained for duration of employment)
• At least one year of supervisory experience
• Experience conducting presentations

Preferred Qualifications

• Expertise in planning and program development
• Knowledge of DOHMH and DOE personnel policies and procedures
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
