Supervising Public Health Nurse, Bureau of School Health

The Office of School Health (OSH), a joint program of the New York City Department of Education and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, is seeking a Supervising Public Health Nurse to oversee nursing and paraprofessional staff serving approximately 1.3 million students across 1,800 public and non-public schools in New York City. This supervisory role ensures the health and well-being of students while improving the efficiency of health services and contributing to a safer school environment.

Clinical Setting

OSH provides comprehensive health services to students including case management of chronic health problems, preventive health screening, urgent care, medication administration, preventive counseling, reproductive health services, health education, and referral for care.

Responsibilities

• Provide assignments and schedules for nursing and paraprofessional staff
• Utilize the Automated Student Health Record (ASHR) to generate reports
• Conduct in-service trainings and plan staff development activities
• Participate in recruitment and orientation of new staff
• Analyze data collected in OSH management reports including walk-ins, case management, and special projects
• Participate in disciplinary activities as needed
• Conduct site visits to schools to provide clinical supervision of nurses, advisors, and assistants
• Collaborate with the OSH team including Supervising Medical Doctors, Vision team, and Mental Health team to plan initiatives within assigned areas
• Monitor inventory of medical supplies and equipment within a designated area
• Serve on emergency teams on call for bioterrorism attacks and other emergencies as directed by the Commissioner of the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from a regionally-accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department
• Active license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State, maintained for the duration of employment
• At least one year of supervisory experience
• For assignment to Levels II and III, individuals must meet the supervisory level qualification requirements set forth in Section 11.42 of the New York State Sanitary Code

Preferred Qualifications

• Expertise in planning and program development
• Knowledge of DOHMH and DOE personnel policies and procedures
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
