The Hoover City Board of Education seeks a substitute School Nurse (RN) to support and promote comprehensive health services for assigned school location(s). This position reports to the Principal and District Nurse.
As a School Nurse, you will serve as a health advocate for students and a liaison between school, physicians, parents/guardians, and community health providers. You will assess student health problems, implement the nursing process, make appropriate referrals, and coordinate care with students, teachers, parents, family physicians, and other community health providers.
Responsibilities
- Perform screening procedures as required by the Alabama Department of Health, Alabama Education Agency, and District policy, and report findings as directed
- Provide temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or employees according to District policy and ALSDE guidelines
- Follow notification protocol in cases of accident or illness
- Coordinate a system of administration and management of medications administered at school
- Administer medication according to District policy and procedures
- Review, evaluate, and maintain immunization records
- Maintain complete and accurate health records on each student
- Provide nursing care for students requiring special health procedures (such as catheterization and tube feedings)
- Maintain adequate supplies in the health office
- Report potential school health and safety hazards as directed
- Participate in IEP development, child abuse investigations, and other school committees as requested
- Promote wellness and provide information to facilitate healthy lifestyles among students and employees
- Provide health counseling and teaching on an individual basis
- Contribute to the health education program as a resource person in both planning and teaching capacities, working with the principal and teachers
- Maintain ongoing communication with the Principal and District Nurse regarding health problems and related matters
- Submit timely reports as requested by the District Nurse
- Demonstrate support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities
- Practice within the defined limits of the Alabama Nurse Practice Act, the American Nurses Association Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice, and the Standards of School Nursing Practice of the National Association of School Nurses
- Comply with Alabama Department of Health regulations, District policy, and ALSDE guidelines
- Maintain certification in CPR/AED instruction
- Participate in staff development meetings and professional growth activities
- Complete mandated continuing nursing education requirements to maintain RN license and stay informed of the latest trends in health and education
- Adhere to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor(s)
Required Qualifications
- Current RN license to practice nursing in the State of Alabama
- Three (3) years of nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics, community health, or acute care
- Excellent organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Strong interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills
- Ability to proficiently use current technology
- Current certification in CPR/AED instruction or willingness to obtain
- Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
