Phenix City Public Schools is seeking a substitute school nurse to provide health education and maintain a climate of health and well-being across assigned schools. This nine-month position plays a vital role in supporting student health and safety within the school environment.
Responsibilities
- Schedule and conduct screenings and assessments to detect vision, hearing, and scoliosis problems
- Document and refer students with health deficiencies in accordance with Alabama Department of Public Health regulations
- Establish and maintain contact with community agencies and clinics responsible for providing health care for students
- Investigate referrals regarding individual health problems and refer to appropriate agencies for treatment
- Schedule and conduct home visits when appropriate
- Work with principals and teachers to plan and carry out first aid and safety education programs
- Advise and assist teachers in obtaining materials and resources to enhance school health education programs
- Assist in carrying out policies and procedures for control of communicable diseases within assigned schools
- Conduct inspections and evaluations, furnish information to school officials and parents, and maintain required records
- Review immunization records, notify parents of delinquencies, and provide updates according to Alabama Department of Public Health guidelines and state law
- Provide health-related services to students and assist local school officials in the event of school accidents and emergencies
- Serve as a member of the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) team when the primary services for a student are health-related
- Participate in school staff inservices and professional development activities
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or Superintendent
Required Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
- Active Registered Nurse license in the State of Alabama
- Valid state driver's license

- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
Physical Demands
The position requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear regularly. Occasional requirements include reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.
Work Environment
The noise level varies from quiet to loud depending on the activity and location within the school. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job.
Schedule
Nine-month contract. Other contract terms and salary to be determined by the Board commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.
