Substitute School Nurse LPN or RN

St. Clair County School System is seeking a Substitute School Nurse (LPN or RN) to provide direct and indirect nursing services that enhance student academic achievement and promote healthy lifestyles. This position reports to the Lead Nurse and Principal and may supervise Licensed Practical Nurses and care plans.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a school environment serving school-age children with varying healthcare needs, from routine care to specialized procedures. The role involves collaboration with teachers, administrators, parents, healthcare providers, and other school staff to support student health and wellness.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing services within the RN or LPN scope of practice, including medication administration following Alabama State Department of Education and Alabama Board of Nursing guidelines
• Administer specialized nursing care procedures as directed by healthcare prescribers
• Develop, implement, and maintain individualized healthcare plans for students with special healthcare needs
• Participate in IEP, 504, and PST meetings related to student health issues
• Meet with and educate school staff (teachers, bus drivers, etc.) regarding healthcare plans, food allergies, and dietary restrictions
• Administer first aid according to standard nursing protocols and school policies
• Perform health screening procedures as directed by the Lead Nurse
• Assist with communicable disease control procedures and protocols
• Document all nursing activities thoroughly and accurately
• Compile required departmental and state reports before scheduled deadlines
• Serve as a health liaison between school, healthcare providers, families, and students
• Report potential or current school health/safety/abuse issues or code of conduct violations to the principal, Lead Nurse, or DHR
• Assist with health education programs as directed by the Lead Nurse
• Oversee assigned LPNs and care plans
• Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA
• Assist with development, implementation, and maintenance of the school health office
• Manage supply inventory and ordering using software programs
• Lift and/or move students as needed
• Respond to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner
• Maintain neat and professional appearance with regular and predictable attendance
• Accept location and workplace reassignments as needed

Required Qualifications

• Current Alabama License as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
• Current CPR certification (may be obtained after employment)
• Valid driver's license
• Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and certification licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
• Clinical nursing skills necessary to provide safe care to students with special healthcare needs
• Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with the Lead Nurse, administration, parents, faculty, and students
• Good public relations skills
• Superior leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with large and/or diverse groups
• Proficiency in oral, written, and electronic communications with ability to produce, lead, and deliver presentations to various stakeholders
• Management skills to supervise and direct students
• Ability to organize, maintain, and report data and information related to health
• Ability to use computers and other technology needed to perform the job
• Knowledge of school system functions, departments, personnel, and schools
• Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member
• Ability to provide effective staff development and in-service training
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including after hours, weekends, and holidays when necessary
• Ability to multi-task, delegate appropriately, and prioritize tasks efficiently
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of Board of Education business, staff, and students

Preferred Qualifications

• Clinical nursing experience with school-age children in a hospital, community health setting, or pediatric clinic

Schedule

• 187 days per year
• Flexible schedule with ability to work after hours, weekends, and holidays when necessary

Compensation

• Salary based on the St. Clair County School System Salary Schedule

Performance will be evaluated according to board policy.
