Substitute School Nurse

This is a substitute school nurse position serving students in grades K-12. You will provide primary health and emergency care, promote wellness, and serve as a resource for health concerns in the school setting. This role reports to the School Nurse and Head of School.

Responsibilities

• Administer medications and treatments as ordered
• Provide care for student and staff illness and accidents
• Administer care based on individual health care plans and individual emergency care plans
• Serve as liaison between home and school regarding student health concerns
• Document all encounters in the Electronic Health Record
• Follow communicable disease control procedures and inform administration and/or parents regarding school exclusion and readmission
• Implement the nursing process in a school-based setting and provide support for unlicensed personnel
• Perform skilled nursing care including insulin administration, insulin pump skills, nebulizer treatments, inhalers, and emergency medications
• Provide first aid for various issues throughout the day and notify EMS if needed
• Manage complex situations and triage accordingly for all grade levels, including head injury, psychiatric needs, potential anaphylaxis, and trauma
• Maintain exceptional clinical documentation via computer-based platform for all encounters

Required Qualifications

• Current, unrestricted Illinois State license as a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
• Current CPR certification
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
• Knowledge of current practices for common childhood illnesses and chronic diseases including allergies, asthma management, diabetes, insulin pen and pumps, and seizure management
• Ability to perform skilled nursing care such as insulin administration, insulin pump skills, nebulizer treatments, inhalers, and emergency medications
• Ability to manage complex situations and triage accordingly for grades K-12
• Professing Christian with active participation in a local church body

Preferred Qualifications

• Baccalaureate degree in nursing or related field
• Experience in pediatric and/or community or public health nursing
• Prior experience in school nursing or acute care setting
