Wellstar's Student Nurse Extern Program offers current nursing students an experiential learning opportunity to gain additional bedside experience while completing a pre-licensure RN degree. This position is specifically designed for December 2027 graduates and late graduates at the Paulding Medical location.

The Student Nurse Extern (SNE) provides basic patient care under the direct supervision of a registered professional nurse. You will work in a fast-paced acute care environment, performing essential patient care functions and assisting the nursing team in delivering safe, age-appropriate, and culturally competent care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic patient care needs including hygiene, nutrition, elimination, and physical comfort measures as assigned
  • Perform vital signs, patient ambulation, and transport supplies, equipment, and medications
  • Participate in hourly patient rounding
  • Answer telephone and call lights promptly and notify appropriate staff of patient needs
  • Protect patient rights, confidentiality, dignity, and privacy
  • Maintain clean and clutter-free patient rooms and unit areas
  • Assist the RN and other healthcare team members with care delivery as assigned
  • Perform approved advanced technical procedures as permitted by facility training, which may include phlebotomy, incentive spirometry teaching, oral suctioning, insertion and removal of per wick, and removal of foley catheter
  • Use effective written and oral communication with patients, staff, physicians, families, and visitors
  • Communicate patient care concerns, problems, and emergencies to the RN
  • Support unit performance improvement initiatives and professional nursing practice
  • Maintain consistent use of appropriate hand hygiene and follow PPE and infection control policies
  • Use proper body mechanics and lift equipment
  • Transport unit supplies and patient care supplies as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited program
  • Completion of at least one clinical rotation in an acute care setting prior to starting the role
  • Current enrollment in a nationally accredited Associate, Baccalaureate, or Master's-level pre-licensure nursing program
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with other healthcare providers
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to function in stressful and emergency situations
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Basic computer skills and ability to enter information into an electronic medical record
  • Basic medical terminology knowledge
  • Personal time management skills
