The opportunity

Job Description

Wellstar's Student Nurse Extern Program offers current nursing students an opportunity to gain clinical experience at the bedside while completing a nursing (RN) degree. This role is designed as an experiential learning opportunity for students to develop professional nursing practice through acquisition of basic clinical skills and advancement of patient care knowledge.

The Student Nurse Extern (SNE) provides basic patient care under the direct supervision of a registered professional nurse and reports to the Nurse Manager. You will work in a fast-paced environment requiring multitasking, strong communication, and the ability to function effectively under stressful conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic patient care needs including hygiene, nutrition, elimination, and physical comfort measures as assigned
  • Perform vital signs, patient ambulation, and transport supplies, equipment, and medications
  • Participate in hourly patient rounding
  • Answer telephone and call lights promptly and notify appropriate staff of patient needs
  • Protect patient rights, confidentiality, dignity, and concerns
  • Maintain clean and clutter-free patient rooms and unit areas
  • Assist the RN and other healthcare team members with care delivery as assigned
  • Provide consistent hand hygiene and follow appropriate PPE and infection control policies
  • Utilize proper body mechanics and lift equipment
  • Use effective written and oral communication with patients, staff, physicians, families, and visitors
  • Communicate patient care concerns, problems, and emergencies to the RN
  • Support unit performance improvement initiatives and professional nursing practice through shared governance and evidence-based practice
  • Complete a minimum of three professional development activities per year, which may include local monthly meeting attendance, professional enrichment sessions, or professional practice advancement activities

Advanced Technical Procedures

With appropriate facility education and training, you may perform advanced technical procedures including phlebotomy, incentive spirometry teaching, oral suctioning, insertion and removal of per wick, and removal of foley catheter.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited program
  • Completion of at least one clinical rotation in an acute care setting
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with other healthcare providers
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to function in stressful and emergency situations
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Computer skills and ability to enter information into an electronic medical record
  • Basic medical terminology knowledge
  • Personal time management skills

Education and Program Requirements

This role is for 2027 graduates. You must have completed at least one clinical before starting in the role. Applicants must be enrolled in a nationally accredited Associate, Baccalaureate, or Master's-level pre-licensure nursing program.
