The opportunity

Job Description

Wellstar's Student Nurse Extern Program offers current nursing students an opportunity to gain clinical experience at the bedside while completing a pre-licensure RN degree. This position is designed as an experiential learning opportunity to help students transition toward professional nursing practice through acquisition of basic clinical skills and advancement of patient care knowledge.

The Student Nurse Extern provides basic patient care under the direct supervision of a registered professional nurse and reports to the Nurse Manager. You will work in a fast-paced acute care environment requiring multitasking, strong communication, and the ability to function effectively under stressful conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic patient care needs including hygiene, nutrition, elimination, and physical comfort measures as assigned
  • Perform basic patient care functions such as ambulation, vital signs, transporting supplies, equipment, and patient medications
  • Participate in hourly patient rounding
  • Answer telephone and call lights promptly and notify appropriate staff of patient needs
  • Assist the RN and other healthcare team members with care delivery as assigned
  • Maintain patient rooms and unit areas clean and free of clutter
  • Protect patient rights, confidentiality, concerns, and dignity
  • Provide a safe environment for patient care
  • Proactively offer comfort measures to patients and families
  • Maintain consistent hand hygiene and follow appropriate PPE and infection control policies
  • Reinforce universal precautions with patients and families
  • Use proper body mechanics and lift equipment
  • Transport unit supplies, patient care supplies, medications, and equipment as assigned
  • Use effective written and oral communication with patients, staff, physicians, families, and visitors
  • Communicate patient care concerns, problems, and emergencies to the RN
  • Support unit performance improvement initiatives
  • Complete a minimum of three professional development activities per year, which may include local monthly meeting attendance, professional enrichment sessions, or professional practice advancement activities

Advanced Technical Procedures

With appropriate facility education and training, you may perform advanced technical procedures including phlebotomy, incentive spirometry teaching, oral suctioning, insertion and removal of per wick, and removal of foley catheter.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited program
  • Completion of at least one clinical rotation in an acute care setting prior to start date
  • Enrollment in a nationally accredited Associate, Baccalaureate, or Master's-level pre-licensure nursing program
  • Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with other healthcare providers
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to function in stressful and emergency situations
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Basic computer skills and ability to enter information into an electronic medical record
  • Basic medical terminology knowledge
  • Personal time management skills
