MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center is seeking nursing students graduating in 2027 to participate in the Winter Student Nurse Extern Program. This dayshift position is based on a 48-bed Acute Post-Surgical Unit where you will gain hands-on experience caring for a variety of adult surgical patients including those recovering from orthopedic, neurosurgery, gynecological, bariatric, vascular, general, plastic, oncology, urological, and colorectal procedures.

Clinical Setting

You will work on an acute post-surgical unit alongside an experienced RN mentor and an interdisciplinary care team. For at least 50% of your clinical time, you will receive one-on-one mentorship, coaching, and support to build your clinical skills, critical thinking, and confidence. You will also be supported by a Nursing Professional Development Specialist and participate in bi-weekly educational sessions designed to enhance your learning experience.

Program Structure

The Winter Cohort runs for approximately five weeks, beginning mid-December 2026. During this intensive period, you will work full-time 12-hour shifts aligned with your assigned nurse preceptor's schedule. Time off is not permitted during the cohort. Nurse externs do not work on legal holidays (Christmas and New Year's Day).
