The Student Nurse Extern II functions as a member of the healthcare team delivering nursing care to medical-surgical patients in an acute care hospital setting. Working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, you will apply your clinical knowledge and technical skills to provide safe, patient-centered care while gaining practical experience in your final semester of nursing school.
Clinical Setting
You will work in a medical-surgical unit providing direct patient care in an acute care hospital environment. This role may include orientation with a Registered Nurse during your last semester of clinicals.
Responsibilities
- Attend to patient care needs including answering call lights, bathing, toileting, turning, and providing ice water
- Obtain and correctly label venous puncture specimens for laboratory testing
- Apply EKG leads and run 12-lead EKGs as requested
- Apply telemetry leads as ordered
- Perform hourly rounding and implement safety measures such as bed/chair alarms and fall prevention
- Conduct bedside shift reports using AIDET-P communication techniques
- Obtain vital signs, perform accuchecks and hematests, measure weights, and maintain accurate intake and output records
- Maintain appropriate hand hygiene and isolation practices per policy
- Maintain a clean patient environment through linen changes, trash removal, and environmental cleaning
- Maintain cleanliness of soiled utility rooms and equipment
- Stock rooms with supplies as needed
- Document care provided and charge for appropriate items per nursing policy
- Maintain patient safety during ambulation, transfers, and repositioning
- Communicate pertinent patient information to the RN in a clear, accurate, concise, and timely manner
- Demonstrate appropriate use of chain of command and understanding of delegated responsibilities
- Demonstrate critical thinking skills and ability to prioritize care needs
- Comply with RN direction for patient activity and care
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program
- Completed one semester of clinicals
- Must be in the last semester of clinicals
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Phlebotomy training
- EKG training
- CPR certification
- Proof of continued enrollment in an accredited school of nursing
Additional Requirements
- Completion of mandatory continuing education including department-specific and hospital-wide training (Customer Service, Fire and Safety, Corporate Compliance, Infection Control, etc.)
- Education required by regulatory and accreditation bodies
- Attendance at unit and departmental meetings at least 75 percent of the time or as assigned
- Acceptable attendance and punctuality per hospital policy
