Sterile Processing Technician - Heart Hospital Operating Room (Part-Time, Days)

The Sterile Processing Technician 1 position at Heart Hospital Operating Room is responsible for the coordination, preparation, and delivery of surgical instrumentation and equipment. This part-time, day-shift role ensures that all surgical instruments and equipment are properly cleaned, disinfected, sterilized, and prepared for use in the operating room. The technician also assists with admission, transfer, and discharge processes.

Responsibilities

• Maintain workstation and prep/decontamination areas in a neat, orderly, and efficient manner
• Inspect all instruments for cleanliness and adherence to nationally recognized infection control standards, with special attention to crevices, box locks, cannulas, and other critical areas
• Assist other departments and personnel in acquiring instrumentation and equipment
• Demonstrate complete understanding of prep and decontamination policies and procedures
• Check all instrument sets accurately per lists or policy
• Remove and replace defective instruments from sets and inform appropriate personnel
• Correctly store all sterile instruments at all times
• Wrap and package all instruments per standards to ensure package integrity during sterilization
• Label all instrument packages with ownership, type of instrument, and initials
• Place instrumentation and equipment in proper locations in prep and surgery areas
• Operate and utilize all necessary equipment according to manufacturers' instructions
• Inspect instrument storage areas daily to maintain cleanliness and sterility of processed items
• Retrieve instrumentation from surgery areas and process without delay to ensure availability
• Assist in decontamination duties of all surgical instrumentation and sterile processing equipment
• Follow all decontamination policies and procedures without alteration
• Dispense instrumentation and equipment on time, accurately, and efficiently
• Demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy; maintain current knowledge of all instrument lists
• Convey accurate and timely information regarding instrumentation
• Observe areas in disrepair and report to OR Manager; report unsafe areas or equipment
• Provide immediate response to operating room requests and STAT (emergency) requests
• Accept additional work during slow periods and ask the Prep Lead Technician what needs to be done
• Assist other departmental employees by sharing information on new policies or procedures
• Consult with supervisor in uncertain or unusual situations regarding procedures and policies
• Assess situations, consider alternatives, and choose appropriate courses of action
• Consistently perform organizational Service Standards focused on values, service, and quality
• Perform other duties as assigned
