SRMC MedSurg Nurse Extern

This is a temporary nursing extern position for students in their final semester or year of an accredited RN program (Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate). You will work in medical-surgical nursing areas under the direct supervision and co-assignment of a registered nurse, gaining practical experience in direct and indirect patient care.

Clinical Setting

You will practice across all nursing areas within Summersville Regional Medical Center's acute care facility, a 400-bed hospital in Summersville, West Virginia.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care under RN supervision to promote patient comfort and facilitate diagnostic and treatment procedures as outlined in the nursing care plan
• Assist the RN with patients' activities of daily living according to patient needs and departmental procedures
• Perform designated procedures following departmental protocols
• Accurately observe, record, and report patient concerns, symptoms, reactions, and progress to the RN in a timely manner
• Assist the RN with examinations and procedures according to departmental procedures
• Demonstrate competency in basic and intermediate care skills as verified by your nurse mentor, clinical preceptor, nurse manager, and/or nurse director
• Perform skills identified on the skills inventory that may be carried out independently or under direct RN supervision, as applicable
• Maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe environment to prevent and control infections and ensure safety of patients, visitors, and employees
• Thoroughly clean assigned patient care areas and unit equipment according to departmental procedures and schedules
• Keep hallways and work areas free of equipment according to departmental procedures
• May act as a sitter for patients as assigned by the charge RN
• May have limited access to non-controlled substances during transport at the request of a licensed care provider
• Attend staff meetings and unit in-services as applicable
• Seek educational opportunities to increase competence and assist in peer education

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in the final semester or year of an accredited Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate RN program
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification obtained within 30 days of hire date

Physical Requirements

• Capable of prolonged periods of standing and walking
• Able to lift up to 40 pounds and push/pull heavy loads
• Possess visual, auditory, and oral acuity along with manual dexterity and technical ability

Schedule

• Varied shifts
• Non-exempt position
• Scheduled weekly hours to be determined
