The University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join the inpatient Palliative Care team within a high-acuity academic medical center. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside an interdisciplinary team providing specialized care to patients with serious and complex illnesses. You will support symptom management, goals-of-care discussions, advance care planning, and patient and family support while collaborating closely with physicians, nursing staff, social work, chaplaincy, and consulting services.

Clinical Setting

The palliative care team operates within one of the region's leading academic health systems, delivering patient-centered, evidence-based care across a diverse inpatient population.

Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient palliative care consultations and follow-up care
  • Provide compassionate and sensitive support and communication with patients, families, and health care teams regarding terminal illness and disease processes
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and develop treatment plans
  • Assist with symptom management and pain management strategies
  • Facilitate goals-of-care and advance care planning discussions
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes
  • Support patients and families through complex medical decision-making
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record
  • Serve as a mentor to assist other advanced practice providers to develop expertise in clinical skills, decision making, diagnostic reasoning, and problem solving
  • Mentor others in leading development and implementation of evidence-based best practices
  • Serve as an interdisciplinary team leader or committee chair who can lead initiatives to improve patient outcomes within UMMC and outside the organization
  • Take the lead in difficult situational decision making and serve as a resource for other healthcare team members
  • Lead or mentor others in leading quality improvement initiatives in your area of practice
  • Serve as a role model educator for nurses and other healthcare personnel
  • Demonstrate in-depth understanding of palliative care principles, hospice philosophy, hospice eligibility, and end-of-life care
  • Be knowledgeable on palliative and hospice quality measures

Required Qualifications

  • Master's or Doctoral degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Nurse Practitioner license in the state of Maryland
  • National board certification
  • Minimum 3 years of Nurse Practitioner experience
  • Minimum 2 years of palliative care experience
  • Prior inpatient palliative care and hospice experience
  • Strong communication and interdisciplinary collaboration skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • DEA and CDS registration or eligibility
