Senior Registered Nurse - Ambulatory Surgery Center PACU

Parkland is seeking a Senior Registered Nurse for the Ambulatory Surgery Center PACU. This full-time position provides critical care to pre- and post-operative patients in a fast-paced surgical setting. You will work day shift, Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, coordinating patient care delivery using the Parkland nursing professional practice model while adhering to American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) guidelines and standards.

Clinical Setting

You will work in an Ambulatory Surgery Center providing pre- and post-operative nursing care. The role requires the ability to float between Pre-op, PACU, and Phase II areas as needed. You will care for patients transitioning through surgical procedures and recovery, ensuring safe passage without preventable complications or delays.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a patient advocate, focusing on patient needs, rights, confidentiality, and cultural and religious preferences
• Complete comprehensive pre- and post-operative patient assessments and participate in Universal Protocol and site marking identification
• Provide critical care to pre- and post-operative patients, including continuous monitoring, appropriate interventions, and recognition of changes in patient condition
• Perform safe medication administration, pain management, and emergency resuscitation care
• Exercise independent judgment in providing nursing care and recommend changes to the plan of care as needed
• Ensure patients meet Phase 1 discharge criteria and provide appropriate handoff for safe continuity of care
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in patient care records and hospital documents
• Assist patients with transfer to recliners, ambulation, and discharge to vehicles while ensuring patient safety
• Provide individualized patient and family education and discharge planning customized to the patient and procedure
• Contact patients post-operatively per policy to monitor for complications
• Serve as a preceptor and trainer to newer nursing staff members
• Prepare and conduct in-service educational programs for the ASC at least once per year
• Identify ways to improve work processes and patient satisfaction, making recommendations to your supervisor
• Maintain knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines impacting ASC nursing practice
• Stay current with developments, advancements, and trends in nursing practice through seminars, professional journals, and professional organizations such as ASPAN

Required Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited school of nursing
• Minimum 2 years of experience in an acute care hospital
• Current, valid RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing, temporary RN license from the Texas Board of Nursing, or valid Compact RN license
• Current healthcare provider BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network
• Current Advanced Life Support (ALS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification from American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network (must be current on hire or placement in role)
• Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification from American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or Military Training Network (current incumbents and those hired between February 1-29, 2024 have 90 days from date of hire or placement to attain this certification)
• Pass Medication Examination prior to hospital orientation (current Parkland employees requesting reassignment must have current Medication Examination on file)
• Demonstrate leadership abilities
• Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and hospital staff in accordance with established policies and procedures
• Communicate effectively via the overhead paging system
• Demonstrate the ability to provide direction to non-nursing staff, serve as a preceptor, and serve on rotation as a charge nurse
• Prepare and conduct in-service educational programs
• Demonstrate patient-centered and patient-valued behaviors
• Possess knowledge of surgical procedures, anesthesia techniques, and consequent nursing interventions
• Recognize emergency situations and assist in corrective action
• Organize and prioritize assignments, duties, and responsibilities
• Demonstrate acceptable knowledge of ASPAN Standards and Guidelines as applicable
