Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital is accepting applications for a paid Senior Nurse Extern internship designed for nursing students in their 2nd-5th semesters. This position offers valuable hands-on clinical experience working alongside experienced Registered Nurses in a supportive healthcare environment with dedicated unit placement, direct mentorship, and flexible scheduling to accommodate academic commitments.
Clinical Setting
You will work in a hospital setting providing general patient care under the guidance and oversight of Registered Nurses. The role includes potential assignment to behavioral health and suicide risk units, which require specialized observation and safety protocols.
Responsibilities
- Provide routine patient care including hygiene, mobility, nutrition, and continuous observation under RN guidance
- Perform advanced skills after demonstrating competency, including nasogastric tube irrigation and removal, suctioning, wound irrigation, complex dressing changes, enteral tube feeding maintenance (Dobhoff, nasogastric, and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy), and tracheostomy care
- Perform increased or continuous visual observation for Baker Act, behavioral health, and suicide risk patients; utilize the Safe Patient Room Environment Checklist during staff changes or transfer of care
- Assist patients with hygiene, mobility, and nutritional needs
- Maintain safety and security of patients, families, staff, and other healthcare team members
- Ensure patient privacy, rights, and confidentiality
- Follow standard precautions and adhere to hand hygiene and personal protective equipment procedures
- Communicate patient condition information to the RN and other healthcare team members
- Participate in handoff reports and conduct purposeful hourly rounding
- Document information according to Baptist Health policies and guidelines
- Transport and assist patients through admission and discharge processes; transport Baker Act, behavioral health, and suicide risk patients to diagnostic testing and procedures
- Maintain a safe and clean environment
- Provide exceptional service and care to patients, families, customers, and team members
- Transport and deliver items, equipment, blood products, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs) throughout the facility
- May have limited access to medication storage areas
- Receive and process incoming calls, patient calls, and guest requests
- Maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with Baptist Health policies and applicable federal, state, and local standards
- Maintain compliance with all Baptist Health policies and procedures
- Complete all mandatory training
- Participate in nursing Performance Improvement activities as assigned
- Demonstrate awareness of legal issues, patient rights, and compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency standards
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care for the assigned unit's patient population
- Assess data reflective of patient status and interpret information to identify age-specific requirements
- Use time and resources effectively and efficiently
- Perform all other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled in an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and preparing to enter the final two semesters or quarter of the applicable nursing program, OR completed nursing program without current license
- Completed Senior Nurse Intern competencies
- Proof of continued enrollment in a pre-licensure, professional nursing program with no break in enrollment exceeding one year (for pre-graduation applicants)
- Current BLS/Healthcare Provider certification
