School registered nurse

Bond Health Staffing is seeking a Registered Nurse to serve as a School Nurse in Manhattan. This full-time position operates Monday through Friday with weekly pay. You will provide medical treatment, first aid, emergency care, and medication administration to students in school programs under the direction of a supervising Registered Nurse and in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a school-based setting serving students with developmental disabilities, providing direct care assistance including suctioning, tube feedings, tracheostomy care, colostomy bag management, and catheterization. You may be assigned to various program sites and may be required to visit students at home as requested by the Director.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a member of the interdisciplinary team and participate in consultative processes with parents and team members
• Assist the Registered Nurse in coordinating and following through on health care service provisions for students
• Keep progress notes under supervision of the Registered Nurse and summarize findings for quarterly, semi-annual, and annual reviews
• Provide regular and PRN health care to students as instructed by the Registered Nurse
• Provide direct hygiene and health instruction to staff, students, and families as required
• Identify and assess communicable diseases and infections, implementing appropriate protective and preventive measures
• Report to the consulting physician and Infection Control Nurse
• Provide staff training in infection control regularly and as needed
• Provide first aid to students in need of immediate care, with referral to the Registered Nurse, private physician, or outside emergency services as necessary
• Monitor required staff health records and provide tests in accordance with regulatory agency requirements
• Maintain up-to-date and accurate records of examinations, immunizations, illnesses, accidents, and other pertinent student data
• Administer medications as prescribed and supervise secured storage of medications
• Refer all consults and diagnostic reports to the Registered Nurse for review
• Transport students to appointments as necessary
• Maintain the Nursing Office and order supplies and equipment as required
• Stay current with changes in the Nursing Services field
• Perform other related duties as requested

Required Qualifications

• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Good organizational skills
• Interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with coworkers, employees, students, families, and outside contacts
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of student and staff records
• Knowledge of equipment typically used by persons receiving services, including wheelchairs, walkers, prone standers, lap trays, and adaptive devices
• Ability to analyze problems and determine corrective actions
• Willingness to work at various program sites

Education and Experience

• Graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing
• At least one year of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the delivery of community-based health services to individuals with developmental disabilities

Licenses and Certifications

• Active license and current registration as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York

Work Environment

Work may be performed under pressure and may be mentally and physically fatiguing. The role can be very stressful. You will have regular exposure to a variety of physical working conditions related to providing personal care assistance to students. Special precautions are required when handling body fluids.
