This position provides comprehensive school health services to support student learning and well-being. As a School Nurse/RN, you will develop and coordinate the school health program, manage student health records, conduct health screenings, and provide emergency care when needed.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a school environment, serving students from kindergarten through high school. The role reports to the Principal and Administrator designated by the Superintendent.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain the school health program
  • Participate in health curriculum committee planning
  • Coordinate school immunization programs, physical examinations, and screening tests for vision, hearing, and scoliosis
  • Observe students regularly to identify health needs and instruct teachers on screening for health defects
  • Maintain current cumulative health records for all students
  • Report on student health matters to parents, school personnel, physicians, clinics, and other agencies as directed by the principal
  • Visit students' homes when necessary
  • Provide emergency care and first aid to students and staff in the absence of a physician, following established procedures
  • Provide in-service training to school personnel on health-related topics, including CPR
  • Make recommendations to the principal regarding individual student health needs
  • Implement Board policy on exclusion and readmission of students with infectious or contagious diseases
  • Assist bus drivers with student conduct and safety, including helping young or disabled students board and exit the bus
  • Participate in daily and long-range lesson planning and classroom activity planning
  • Conduct learning exercises with small groups of children
  • Guide children in positive peer interactions and play
  • Alert teachers to special needs of individual children
  • Provide escort and assistance to children as necessary
  • Supervise children during regular play periods
  • Perform other duties as required by the principal and administrator

Required Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) degree
  • Current Alabama nursing license
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed
  • Capable of lifting moderate weights

Schedule

  • Nine-month employment year
  • Salary to be established by the Board

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
