School Nurse

YAI is seeking a School Nurse to provide comprehensive nursing services for students in an assigned school setting. You will work collaboratively with school staff, families, and external providers to protect and maintain students' health, with a focus on students with complex medical needs, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and neurodivergent populations.

In this role, you will be responsible for the full scope of school nursing practice, including health assessments, care planning, medication administration, and emergency response. You will develop and maintain understanding of applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations governing school nursing in New York State, ensuring compliance with infection control practices, immunization requirements, communicable disease protocols, and OSHA regulations.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing services and conduct health assessments for assigned students, obtaining medical information and regularly engaging with students and staff to inform individualized support plans
• Develop and maintain compliance with New York State Department of Health Article 43 requirements, monitoring completion and submission of annual physical requirements and health forms for all students and staff
• Utilize the nursing process to identify student health needs, establish person-centered plans of care in collaboration with families and providers, implement nursing interventions, and evaluate outcomes
• Administer medications, treatments, and specialized care to students according to documented requirements and medical provider instructions
• Conduct observations and collect data to support assessments, including monitoring vital signs, reactions to medications or treatments, and concerns from students, staff, parents, or providers
• Administer first aid and make appropriate recommendations and notifications for significant injuries or illnesses
• Facilitate implementation, training, and monitoring of infection control practices, immunization protocols, communicable disease management, and exposure control across the school
• Collaborate with school staff to facilitate medical treatment and supports for students with complex or specialized medical needs, including coordination with speech department regarding feeding-related needs, modified diets, and g-tube/enteral feedings
• Identify and report school building safety or environmental issues that may impact student or staff health to school leadership
• Document all medical and health-related services provided to students in accordance with established guidelines and applicable regulations, including documentation of injuries, accidents, and reportable incidents
• Write, review, and update plans of nursing care and individualized support plans for students
• Provide guidance and direction to temporary or 1:1 nursing staff assigned to individual students
• Communicate regularly with families and staff regarding school policies, procedures, health concerns, and medical needs; make timely notifications regarding incidents or health-related concerns to parents and providers
• Collaborate with the school's multidisciplinary team regarding medical needs and concerns, interpret medical data, coordinate follow-ups, and collect medical reports and documentation
• Present information and respond to inquiries regarding student health status in case conferences and staff meetings
• Respond to emergency medical situations, lead response to codes, make notifications to staff and families, call 911, and perform life-saving measures as needed
• Provide in-service training and education related to medical needs and protocols; communicate updates or changes to medical requirements, including signs and symptoms, seizure or medical emergency plans, and allergies
• Participate in review of potential new admissions by assessing clinical needs and making recommendations regarding the school's ability to support applicants
• Comply with all Federal, State, and Local regulatory requirements, including HIPAA
• Perform all other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Valid, active Registered Nursing (RN) license issued by the New York State Education Department
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers (must be obtained within 90 days of appointment if not currently held)
• Two years of experience working with school-aged children in any capacity, ideally in a pediatric setting providing services for intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental health, crisis intervention, or other complex needs
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with ability to effectively interact with and appropriately communicate medical information to students, families, and staff at all levels
• Highly organized and flexible with strong administrative and follow-up skills, including ability to manage multiple priorities and meet all applicable requirements and deadlines
• Familiarity with the needs of school-aged children, including neurodivergent students or students with complex needs, related clinical syndromes, medical support needs, and cooccurring behavioral or mental health diagnoses
• Proficiency with computers and electronic systems, including ability to use or quickly learn Salesforce, email, Microsoft Office Suite, Workday, and other related electronic programs
• Ability to report on-site to assigned school on a regular basis
• Ability to meet essential physical demands of the position, including frequent walking, sitting, standing, pulling, and reaching with hands and arms; using hands to handle, finger, or feel objects, tools, or controls; bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and pushing as needed; physical capacity to work with and implement emergency interventions including lifting or moving individuals of any weight with or without assistance of equipment or other staff; ability to run if needed

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience as a school nurse
• Nursing experience in any setting working with pediatric patients and their families
• Familiarity with local oversight agency regulations applicable to medical or nursing care in a school setting, specifically New York State Education Department, NYC Department of Education, or New York State Department of Health
