As a School Nurse, you will promote health and safety in the school environment and provide comprehensive health services to students, faculty, and staff. You will enhance the educational potential of all students by promoting wellness, minimizing absences due to illness, and creating a healthy school climate.
Clinical Setting
You will work in a school environment, collaborating with school health professionals, staff members, parents, and community health professionals to ensure a healthy school climate.
Responsibilities
- Provide emergency care in case of sudden illness and administer first aid for injuries to students or staff according to established policies and procedures
- Administer prescribed medication to students in accordance with law and Board policy
- Receive training and certification in the use of AEDs as required by the director of special services and/or building principal
- Provide training and supervision for the emergency administration of epinephrine, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), and other emergency interventions with designated school staff
- Help prevent and control communicable disease through inspections, lectures, exclusion, and re-admission of students and staff in keeping with federal and state law, administrative rules, and Board policy
- Conduct health services and screening programs as required by federal and state law, administrative rules, and Board policy
- Conduct physical examinations
- Make referrals and conduct follow-up activities as necessary
- Assist the building principal and child study team in the identification and placement of students with disabilities who need special education services
- Provide special health care and related services to meet the needs of students with disabilities
- Notify the building principal or designee to arrange for immediate examination of any student who appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Report any suspicion of child abuse to local law enforcement or the Department of Health and Welfare, as well as the director of special services and building principal
- Provide information and training on health matters at staff meetings and in-service trainings
- Communicate with families referral information and encourage follow-up as needed with health care providers and/or community agencies
- Prepare health and safety reports as required by federal and state law, administrative rules, and Board policy and as requested by the building principal
- Utilize state law, professional practice guidance, and the Idaho State Board of Nursing Rules when developing care plans
- Promptly report issues that may arise to the building principal
- Adhere to The Code of Ethics of the Idaho Teaching Profession adopted by the Professional Standards Commission and the State Board of Education
- Know and follow school district policy and chain of command
- Attend district in-services and meetings as directed
- Represent the school district in a positive manner
- Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as the Superintendent and/or Board may deem necessary
Required Qualifications
- Idaho Pupil Personnel Services certificate with a School Nurse endorsement
- Clear and valid Idaho RN license
- Current CPR Certification
- Ability to work with students, staff, parents, and the public
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- Previous school nurse experience
