The opportunity

Job Description

Portsmouth Public Schools seeks a substitute School Nurse (RN) to provide nursing care and health services to students. This position reports to the Building Principal and works under the supervision of the Supervisor of Health Services.

Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care to students and perform nursing assessments of students sent to the school health clinic
  • Implement grade level screening programs for students, including hearing, vision, height, weight, and blood pressure screenings at appropriate grade levels
  • Maintain and operate the school clinic, including preparing and maintaining student and clinic records
  • Administer medications and treatments as directed; administer first aid
  • Make observations and assessments of student conditions and implement appropriate plans of care
  • Counsel with students, parents, and teachers about health problems observed
  • Refer students for outside medical care as needed
  • Log information pertaining to student and staff clinic visits and medical care provided
  • Maintain records of medication administration, treatments, and procedures performed
  • Review student immunization records to ensure compliance with state immunization laws for school attendance; maintain immunization records
  • Provide immunizations to students and staff as directed by the School Physician
  • Provide health instruction on nutrition, hygiene, grooming, weight control, first aid, disease prevention, substance abuse, and related health concerns
  • Provide health counseling to students, parents, and school personnel
  • Maintain a neat, attractive clinic with adequate supplies
  • Perform related tasks as required

Required Qualifications

  • License or Certificate in Practical Nursing as currently defined by state law
  • Thorough knowledge of common medical practices, procedures, and techniques associated with standard physical examinations
  • Thorough knowledge of preliminary recognition of medical problems and administration of medications related to treatment and first aid
  • Ability to administer medications and apply therapeutic treatments as required
  • Ability to follow technical oral and written instructions in exact detail
  • Ability to maintain accurate records

Physical Requirements

  • Light work requiring exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and negligible force constantly
  • Reaching, standing, walking, and fingering required
  • Vocal communication required for expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word
  • Hearing required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels
  • Visual acuity required for color perception, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, determining accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities
  • Work performed in inside environmental conditions with exposure to hazards and atmospheric conditions

Compensation

  • Pay Grade: $150.00 per day
  • Non-exempt overtime status
