School Nurse- substitute for 1-2 weeks (Sept. 11-25)

This is a substitute school nurse position for a 1-2 week assignment (September 11-25). As a registered professional nurse in a school setting, you will strengthen and facilitate the educational process through direct healthcare services to students, including health promotion, medication management, and case management of health issues.

Clinical Setting

You will work in an assigned school campus, reporting to the Principal or Assistant Principal. The role involves working with students in a normal office environment as well as inside and outside school facilities.

Responsibilities

• Maintain all nurse office records related to student records, health plans, and medication administration/disposal records in a timely manner
• Maintain health and developmental history from parent/guardian for each assigned student
• Observe and screen students per current Arkansas regulations; evaluate findings and initiate referrals as appropriate
• Assist with physical and other health-related examinations conducted in the school
• Maintain office records, supply and equipment inventory, and nurse office professional appearance
• Report supply needs and equipment maintenance per district procedures
• Maintain standard office setup to meet current professional standards and regulations for emergency coverage and record accessibility
• Develop and implement health care plans for identified individual students
• Obtain information from physicians and other health care professionals to assist in developing Individual Health Care Plans
• Conduct or participate in required meetings regarding chronic and acute health care needs of students
• Serve as liaison between school personnel, family, health care professionals, and the community
• Assist in education of students, parents, and student nurses in chronic or acute health situations
• Participate in policy development and implementation regarding district health management and intervention
• Provide direct care and intervention as indicated for students and staff
• Provide emergency management for injuries and illnesses of students and staff during school hours
• Make appropriate referrals or recommendations for follow-up care per nursing judgment
• Administer medication for designated students per school district policy and state nursing regulations
• Provide routine prescribed intervention for mild disorders and illnesses during the school day
• Provide assessment and treatment within the scope of practice of professional nursing
• Follow state and federal nursing regulations in provision of care
• Maintain knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies including the Arkansas Nurse Practice Act, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, FERPA, HIPAA, AR Mandated Reporter Act, and AR Act 1220

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
• Valid CNA, LPN, or registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Arkansas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners
• Active BLS certification
• Two years of nursing experience, preferably in community health or pediatrics

Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to perform direct care for students, including moderate lifting, bending, and rapid movement. You will be regularly required to sit, stand, and move throughout the facility. Duties typically include considerable walking, standing, stooping, and bending. Physical intervention may be required at times to manage student behavior. Frequent prolonged and irregular hours are expected, with occasional district-wide and statewide travel.
