Great Hearts Academies seeks a substitute School Nurse (RN) to provide medical care and health services to school-age students and staff within the campus health office. This position reports to the Director of Nursing and is responsible for assessing and treating minor injuries, chronic illnesses, and urgent or emergency health needs. The School Nurse will develop and maintain individualized health plans, supervise health office staff, and educate students and staff on health and safety practices.
Clinical Setting
This is a substitute position within the Operations and Health Staff department, based at the home office. The role involves working in a school health office environment with school-age scholars and staff members.
Responsibilities
- Treat minor and emergent injuries and illnesses
- Provide emergency care to stabilize severely ill or injured students or staff until parents, guardians, or EMS arrives
- Perform basic first aid and CPR as needed
- Assess and treat students with acute and chronic illnesses
- Create and maintain individualized health plans (IHPs)
- Attend 504 and IEP meetings for students with noted health concerns
- Maintain certification for vision and hearing screening and SSMP certification
- Identify underlying health conditions through screening and assessment
- Review and implement health care plans for allergy, asthma, seizure, and migraine diagnoses
- Contact parents as needed for illness and injuries
- Educate students on hygiene and safety practices
- Maintain student medication administration records according to medication guidelines
- Dispense daily medications and over-the-counter medications per provider or parent instruction
- Apply basic math skills to ensure proper medication dosages
- Maintain complete, comprehensive, and thorough documentation
- Demonstrate calm, caring demeanor while working with students
- Maintain a clean, organized, and quiet health office; order supplies as needed
- Compile and maintain updated immunization records, hearing and vision screenings, and ASIR cards; file state report by November 15th
- Delegate tasks appropriately to health assistants or unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP)
- Provide guidance and supervision to health office support staff
- Communicate pertinent information to the Director of Nursing and Headmaster
- Supervise prevention and control of communicable disease; interpret exclusion regulations and report disease to leadership

- Recognize and report possible physical, sexual, or psychological abuse of students
- Maintain confidentiality of all student health information in accordance with FERPA and HIPAA
- Wear a name badge with the title of Registered Nurse (RN) clearly visible as required by the Arizona Board of Nursing
- Support or consult on staff health for workplace injuries and redirect as needed
Required Qualifications
- Valid, unencumbered RN license in the operating or compact state
- Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certification
- Department of Public Safety fingerprint clearance and background check
- Ability to obtain certification and conduct hearing and vision screenings per ADHS guidelines
- Ability to obtain SSMP certification and train staff on use of epinephrine, albuterol, and narcan for emergency use
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in school nursing
Education
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program

Physical Requirements
This position requires standing, sitting, repetitious hand and body movements, bending, squatting, and reaching. You may be required to move or position equipment up to approximately 50 pounds.
