Milwaukee Public Schools is recruiting a School Nurse to provide case management and nursing care for students with special care needs in the school setting. Working under physician-prescribed care plans outlined in students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), you will deliver direct nursing services, manage student health records, assess health care needs, and facilitate continuity of care across school and community providers.
Clinical Setting
You will work in the Milwaukee Public Schools environment during the school year, providing nursing services to students with documented special health care needs as outlined in their IEPs.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct nursing care for health and illness needs of students during the school day, ensuring adherence to MPS policies and procedures
- Provide emergency nursing services as necessary
- Maintain confidential records of services provided to students
- Assess health care needs of children upon referral from case managers and determine health care as a related service
- Construct the health component of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) after analysis and synthesis of medical and health data
- Provide consultation to School Nurse Associates (SNAs) in the assessment, evaluation, and management of student health
- Provide health counseling to students and families and assist them in obtaining appropriate health care services
- Facilitate continuity of health care by planning and exchanging information with other school districts, community health providers, and social service agencies while maintaining confidentiality
- Maintain current knowledge of health care and nursing issues through attendance at seminars, conferences, and professional literature review
- Support the MPS Strategic Plan
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university, OR an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) with completion of a 3-credit course in community or public health nursing from a baccalaureate accredited nursing program (proof of course completion and Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction certification required)
- Valid Wisconsin Registered Nurse license
- Current BLS/CPR certification
- Ability to physically perform all duties, including lifting up to 50 pounds
- Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Valid Wisconsin driver's license at time of appointment and throughout employment
- Availability of a properly insured personal automobile for use on the job (car allowance provided)
Schedule
This is a full-time position with a 10-month work schedule during the school year (200 work days).
Compensation
The salary range for this position starts at $63,396.59 and increases according to a set salary schedule based on years of work experience as a fully licensed RN with a BSN or equivalent.
