School Nurse

St. Michael's Catholic Preparatory School seeks a full-time School Nurse to serve as the health and wellness expert for our PreK-12 independent Catholic school community in Austin, Texas. This position provides nursing care to approximately 550 students in grades PreK-8 on the lower campus and approximately 450 students in grades 9-12 on the upper campus. You will work 10 months per year alongside our nursing staff.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a school-based health setting serving a diverse student population across three divisions: Lower School (PreK-4th grade), Middle School (5th-8th grade), and Upper School (9th-12th grade).

Responsibilities

• Provide quality nursing care to ill or injured students, faculty, and staff during the school day
• Manage the health care needs of diabetic students and coordinate simultaneous care for multiple students requiring medication administration or first aid
• Manage other unique school-age medical conditions and maintain a peanut-aware environment
• Maintain accurate medical records in compliance with State of Texas and Diocese of Austin requirements, including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions documentation
• Maintain electronic health records within the school website system using cloud-based electronic student health record and compliance software
• Initiate contact with and serve as liaison between home, school, community health agencies, and private medical providers to enhance health and wellness
• Provide health information and in-service programs on health topics to students, parents, and faculty
• Maintain communication with administrators, teachers, staff, and school families to coordinate action meeting health and safety needs
• Aid in development and maintenance of school health policies
• Coordinate student health curriculum with the physical education department
• Provide medical oversight and first aid care during occasional off-campus retreats and after-school programs

Required Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in the State of Texas
• Current First Aid certification
• Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
• Minimum of two years of professional nursing experience
• Knowledge of children's intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development
• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with both children and adults
• Care, good judgment, and confidentiality in working with students and parents
• Strong organizational skills
• Experience with diabetic children and their daily health care needs
• Experience managing other unique school-age medical conditions
• Experience managing a peanut-aware environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional nursing experience in a school or pediatric setting

Schedule

This is a full-time exempt position working 10 months per year.
