School Nurse

June Shelton School seeks a School Nurse to provide comprehensive health services to approximately 900 students in grades EC through 12 who have learning differences. As the School Nurse, you will be responsible for appraising and caring for the health needs of students and faculty in a supportive educational environment.

Clinical Setting

June Shelton School is the world's largest independent school for bright children with learning differences. The school is accredited by the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest (ISAS) and collaborates with major medical institutions in the Dallas area, including Children's Medical Center and UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Responsibilities

School and Student Management:

• Assess and treat students, documenting findings and treatment in the HIPAA-compliant medical section of the school program
• Notify parents as indicated regarding student health concerns
• Administer first aid for emergencies with appropriate follow-up
• Assist with checking in, logging, and maintaining security of all student medications, ensuring appropriate authorizations are complete
• Promote a positive, caring climate for learning and serve as a positive role model supporting the school's mission
• Maintain positive and effective relationships with colleagues, students, and parents
• Provide relevant counseling and guidance to students and parents regarding health maintenance
• Assist with filing health records and other clerical duties as assigned
• Maintain good attendance and punctuality due to daily interaction with students and colleagues

Program Management:

• Maintain immunization and health information in the student health database
• Notify parents when students are not compliant with Texas immunization requirements
• Maintain privacy of medical records in compliance with HIPAA regulations and Texas HB 300
• Assist with scoliosis screening procedures, process referrals, and follow-up as mandated by Texas law
• Safely deliver medications following nursing procedures
• Implement and maintain a safe system of communicable disease containment, communicating with teachers and parents as indicated
• Comply with and assist in upholding state and school policies
• Keep the clinic clean and well stocked
• Work collaboratively with other nurses to provide care to students and staff and maintain smooth clinic operations

Role of the School Nurse:

• Identify hazards in the school environment and take appropriate action to eliminate or reduce hazards
• Assist with appropriate policy setting for accident prevention and reduction
• Maintain campus AEDs and oxygen units; order supplies when current supplies have expired
• Teach age and developmentally appropriate first aid or other classes as requested
• Assist the Coordinator of Health Services in planning for emergencies
• Distribute first aid supplies to classrooms
• Instruct faculty and staff about Universal Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogen Precautions, care of children with chronic illnesses including diabetes and asthma, use of injectable epinephrine, and commonly used medications including uses, side effects, and methods of administration

Required Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
• Valid registered nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners
• Current CPR – Healthcare Provider certification
• Minimum two years of nursing experience
