Baltimore County Public Schools seeks a School Nurse to deliver comprehensive health services to all students across the district. In this leadership role, you will manage the school health services program, coordinate care for students with chronic health conditions, and work collaboratively with school staff, families, and healthcare providers to identify and address health barriers to student achievement.
Clinical Setting
You will work in a school environment serving the student population of Baltimore County Public Schools. The role involves managing health services across the school community, including coordination with certified nursing assistants and other school staff.
Responsibilities
- Manage the school health services program, including delegation and oversight of certified nursing assistants and other school staff involved in providing health services
- Administer first aid for injury and illness, and administer medications and health care treatments
- Identify health barriers to student achievement and work with school staff and families to remediate those barriers
- Assist the principal and staff to improve student attendance and achievement
- Provide and coordinate health care interventions, including emergency responses
- Develop plans of care for students with chronic health conditions
- Assess the health needs of the school community
- Coordinate health matters between healthcare providers, families, and the school
- Conduct, coordinate, and follow up on health screening programs
- Maintain school health records and ensure compliance with state health mandates for school attendance
- Monitor the spread of communicable diseases and develop and implement strategies to control transmission
- Promote a safe and orderly school environment
- Provide health counseling and health education to help students make healthy choices, manage chronic health conditions, and make informed healthcare decisions
- Provide health consultation to the principal and health services to employees for acute illness and injuries
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Education
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree in nursing OR completion of a nursing diploma program
- Two years of professional nursing experience
Licenses and Certifications
- Valid license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing
- Current CPR certification
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the nursing process
- Knowledge of pathophysiology and nursing management of common acute and chronic health conditions of the school population
- Knowledge of tools, instruments, and equipment used in nursing
- Knowledge of current health issues and trends
- Skill in the provision of a variety of nursing care services
- Skill in monitoring and assessment of patients' health care needs and services
- Skill in preparation and maintenance of records
- Skill in verbal and written communication, including interdisciplinary and multicultural communication
- Skill in the use of computers and word processing, database, patient care documentation, and spreadsheet software packages
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, parents, and BCPS supervisors and administrators
- Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information and records
- Ability to apply the nursing process in the community setting
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in nursing
Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this position may include physical activities such as walking, standing, and lifting, operation of medical equipment and instruments, and travel throughout the county.
Conditions of Employment
- Persons appointed to this position may be required to work beyond normally scheduled hours with little or no advanced notice
- Persons appointed to this position must obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing within five years of employment. Employees who do not obtain this requirement may be terminated
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa in the United States is required
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $62,252 - $121,924 (10-month position)
This position may be eligible for relocation bonus, extra duty activities pay, or other student activities pay as defined in the applicable Bargaining Unit Agreement.
