School Nurse - Pay Range: $49,972-$76,510

Newington Public Schools seeks a School Nurse to serve as the health professional at Newington High School. The school nurse is responsible for implementing the total health services program, reporting to the Senior Nurse Administrator for program implementation and to the school principal as a member of the school support services team.

Responsibilities

• Implement school health policies, communicable disease control, first aid measures, and standing orders
• Provide health counseling to students, parents, and staff using theories from nursing and physical, behavioral, public health, and social sciences; make referrals to community resources when appropriate
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive health records
• Verify compliance with state-mandated immunization requirements for all students
• Arrange and conduct special immunization programs as requested by the School Medical Advisor in consultation with the Newington Director of Health
• Arrange for and assist school doctors in conducting physical examinations for students and athletes; interpret results to students, parents, and school personnel as indicated
• Conduct vision, hearing, and posture screenings and make appropriate referrals for any deviations from normal
• Respond to emergencies and sudden illnesses occurring at school; instruct others on follow-up care
• Collaborate with school professionals, parents, and caregivers to meet the health, developmental, and educational needs of students; serve as a member of interdisciplinary teams
• Assess students with special health care needs, plan and provide appropriate nursing care, and evaluate identified outcomes
• Support students, families, and the school community in achieving optimum wellness through appropriately designed and delivered health education
• Prepare health care plans for students as needed
• Remain current with nursing professional literature and developments in the field

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited college
• Current Connecticut registered nursing license
• Thorough knowledge of health-related education and public health laws, practices, and procedures
• Knowledge of school nursing
• Strong diagnostic skills
• Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Ability to deal effectively with staff and families
• Ability to establish and maintain complex files and record systems
• Ability to use computer equipment and related software programs
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of information
• Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, changing priorities, and conditions
• Ability to concentrate on fine detail with constant interruption
• Ability to attend to task for more than 60 minutes at a time
• Ability to remember multiple tasks and assignments over long periods
• Ability to move throughout all buildings and sites
• Ability to hear normal sounds with some background noise and communicate effectively
• Ability to file correspondence and reports in file cabinet drawers ranging from 1 to 5 feet from the floor
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
