School Nurse

Orleans Elementary School is seeking a School Nurse to manage a busy health office and provide comprehensive healthcare services to students, families, and staff. This role is central to maintaining a safe and healthy school environment through direct patient care, health education, preventive screenings, and coordination with community health resources.

Clinical Setting

You will work in an elementary school health office, serving as the primary healthcare provider for students and staff. The role requires managing a high-volume health office while maintaining a safe, organized, and welcoming environment that reflects caring, kindness, and respect.

Responsibilities

• Provide basic healthcare to students in case of injury or acute illness
• Administer medications and maintain accurate medication records
• Perform health screenings including hearing, vision, postural screening, and BMI assessments
• Monitor and maintain student immunization and vaccination records
• Update and organize student medical histories
• Detect health problems in early stages through regular screenings and assessments
• Develop and implement Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCP) and 504 plans, or assist with development of Individual Educational Plans
• Manage chronic disease care and keep families informed of progress and issues
• Inform families of major public health initiatives such as screenings and flu clinics
• Keep families informed of health office visits involving significant injuries or illness, as appropriate
• Ensure compliance of school health programs with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies
• Maintain a safe physical, emotional, and intellectual environment within the health office
• Utilize evidence-based practice supported by current research
• Collaborate with administrative and educational staff through staff meetings, student support teams, crisis teams, and wellness committees
• Consult with healthcare providers, specialists, nurse educators, community agencies, mental health providers, and local boards of health to improve practice
• Provide health education and wellness training to students, families, school staff, and the community
• Protect student autonomy, dignity, rights, values, and beliefs while recognizing cultural diversity
• Reflect on student health outcomes to assess effectiveness of health office practices

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science or Master of Science in Nursing
• Experience in child health nursing, preferably in a school setting
• Experience or training with pediatric emergencies, postural screening, school nursing, vision and hearing testing, diabetes care, health assessments, counseling parents in positive child-rearing practices, and BMI assessments
• Knowledge of medical disorders and treatment
• Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between the school, local health agency, and other community resources
• Proficiency with computer skills
• Ability to be flexible and efficient in a busy setting and to collaborate on a regular basis
• Sound judgment reflecting integrity and trustworthiness, with demonstrated ability to protect student confidentiality
• Effective written, verbal, nonverbal, and visual communication skills
• Detail-oriented approach to work

Compensation

• Salary: $59,367.00 - $122,255.00
