Provide comprehensive nursing services to students attending Buncombe County, Asheville City, and assigned Charter Schools. This full-time position focuses on early detection, intervention, referral, and follow-up to decrease absenteeism and improve school performance. You will assess student health needs, develop and implement individualized health care plans, train school staff on required care procedures, and coordinate health services with school personnel, parents, and community providers.
Responsibilities
- Assess student health needs and prepare plans of care using the nursing process, including assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, intervention, and evaluation
- Develop individual health care plans for students with chronic special health care needs and train school personnel to provide or assist with health procedures
- Serve as liaison for student health services between school staff, parents, and community providers
- Ensure Emergency Action Plans are in place for students with chronic health care needs and verify school personnel have competency in required health procedures
- Identify staff training needs for medication administration and medical procedures; provide annual and as-needed training
- Formally audit the school's medication process, provide improvement plans, and monitor follow-through
- Assess students who self-carry medication to ensure they have knowledge and ability to use it properly
- Provide health education and educational activities that promote prevention and control of communicable diseases for students, parents, and staff
- Offer and assist with mandated trainings including Allergy/Epinephrine, Diabetic Care Management, and Blood-borne Pathogen training
- Screen assigned students via Health Fairs and refer students for vision concerns; track referred students to ensure care is secured and follow-up is completed
- Assist in assuring immunization compliance
- Participate in development and implementation of the school's emergency and disaster preparedness and response plans
- Review injury reports and discuss themes, concerns, and needed follow-up with school principal
- Participate in Public Health disasters or outbreak duties as directed by the Buncombe County Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Director
- Confer with School Health Supervisor regarding unusual client situations to determine appropriate course of action
- Serve as a resource when staff have questions or concerns about medical procedures, medications, or student health concerns
- Promote and participate in wellness activities as available
- Complete monthly, mid-year, and end-of-year reports
- Serve on school and district committees as needed
- Participate in school-related meetings, continuing education, and relevant events
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina
- Valid North Carolina driver's license
- Current BLS Certification
- National School Nurse Certification within three years of hire
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Ambulatory Electronic Health Record (EHR) system experience
- Strong time management, priority setting, and project management skills
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- Ability to understand, interpret, and relate oral and written instructions
- Skilled in clear communication, listening, and providing direct feedback
- Excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of others
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task in a busy environment
- Ability to prioritize workload and multiple tasks
- Strong desire to work with students in a school setting
Preferred Qualifications
- Spanish speaking skills (eligible for compensation add-on pending skills assessment after employment begins)
Schedule
- Full-time position, 11 months per year with 1 month off during summer
- Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (or flexed to meet client needs)
- 40 hours per week
- Weekend, holiday, or evening coverage occasionally required
- Work hours must be flexible to respond to special work assignments or evening activities as requested
- Regular on-site attendance is an essential function of this position
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: $64,610 (exempt) at 92.3% FTE with 11-month schedule
- Biweekly pay deposits made 12 months annually
- Eligible for MAHEC Total Rewards Package including paid holiday and personal time off in addition to the 11-month work schedule
- Eligible for any enrolled benefits and receive regular pay deposits during the month scheduled off
- Qualifying employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program; employees who meet federal requirements may be eligible to have remaining student loan balances forgiven after 10 years of qualifying payments while working full-time at MAHEC
