SCHOOL NURSE-LPN

Butler County Schools seeks a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to serve as School Nurse, promoting and supporting the medical welfare of students so they can perform to their full abilities. You will work in a school clinic setting, managing student health needs, coordinating with health professionals, and serving as a health liaison between home and school.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a school clinic environment within the Butler County Schools system, reporting to the Principal/Designee and Lead Nurse. The role involves medium physical work, occasionally exerting up to 50 pounds of force and frequently up to 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain the school clinic area for safety, cleanliness, and adequate supply stocking
• Assist health professionals during scheduled school health clinics to ensure smooth operations
• Perform and document required health screenings, including pediculosis and scoliosis screenings
• Maintain clinic logs of student visits with appropriate descriptive information
• Provide routine first aid and health procedures, including proper referral of serious illnesses or injuries
• Administer CPR in emergency situations as indicated
• Assist students with required medications and administer medications following school and county policies, documenting according to established guidelines
• Review health records and immunization compliance
• Provide nursing assessment and health appraisals to identify existing or potential health problems, communicable diseases, or other conditions affecting school performance
• Maintain a current list of students with acute and/or chronic conditions and implement plans for students with chronic health problems
• Counsel students and parents concerning health problems
• Establish safe clinic procedures
• Contact parents/guardians as needed
• Serve as a health liaison between home and school
• Provide referral and follow-up of identified health problems and report communicable diseases to appropriate agencies
• Assist school personnel with completion of incident/accident reports
• Maintain cooperative working relationships with appropriate governmental agencies
• Communicate effectively with the public, staff members, students, parents, administrators, and other contact persons using tact and good judgment
• Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters
• Model and maintain high ethical standards
• Follow attendance, punctuality, and proper dress rules
• Ensure adherence to good safety standards
• Demonstrate initiative in assigned responsibilities
• Maintain expertise in your assigned area
• Participate in training programs to increase skill and proficiency
• Keep supervisor informed of potential problems or unusual events
• Respond to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner
• Serve on school/system committees as required or appropriate

• Demonstrate support for the school system and its goals and priorities
• Identify potential problems or opportunities for improvement
• Prepare all required reports and maintain appropriate records
• Participate in cross-training activities as required
• Perform other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position

Required Qualifications

• Current unencumbered Alabama LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) license
• LPN degree/certification from an accredited nursing program
• Current CPR certification
• Knowledge of public health nursing as it applies to the public school system
• Ability to observe students for development and health patterns in making nursing judgments and diagnoses
• Ability to implement plans for students with chronic health problems and coordinate medication administration within state law and Board policies
• Ability to demonstrate effective skills in listening, speaking, and writing
• Ability to work with school personnel, parents, children, and agencies

Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of three years of successful experience in pediatric, public health, or school nursing

Terms of Employment

Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the System's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the System. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
