School Nurse

The School Nurse maintains and improves the health of students, enabling them to benefit fully from their educational experiences. Working at the building level, you will promote optimum health status and lifestyles for all students through collaborative efforts involving the home, school, and community.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the development and implementation of health programs and maintenance of safe, healthful school environments
• Disseminate health education information to teachers, parents, and students; provide direct classroom instruction when needed
• Assist in developing health education curriculum
• Conduct health appraisals of referred students and provide health counseling to students and parents as necessary
• Perform vision, auditory, and scoliosis screenings in compliance with health screening mandates
• Conduct follow-up on all screening deficiencies by assisting parents in planning further examinations and corrections
• Maintain accurate records of activities and student health records at assigned schools
• Record results of health screenings and significant health information in cumulative records
• Complete health and development evaluations for students referred to special education as specified in assessment plans
• Serve as a member of Individualized Education Plan teams to report evaluation results and provide health-related information
• Assist in controlling and preventing communicable disease by providing information to staff, students, and parents about protective measures
• Establish contact with appropriate medical community members for follow-up on chronic and communicable disease cases
• Work with and serve as liaison to school health committees, county health officials, and other agencies concerned with student health and welfare
• Provide emergency care for serious accidents and illnesses occurring at school
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license
• First Aid certification
• CPR certification

Preferred Qualifications

• Pediatric experience (preferred for those assigned to elementary or middle schools)
