School Nurse, Grades 6-8

I Dream Big Academy Charter School seeks a School Nurse (R.N.) to serve students in grades 6-8 and support the health and wellness of the entire school community. As the school's primary healthcare provider, you will blend expert medical care with compassionate support to create a thriving, healthy learning environment. This is a regular, full-time 10-month position reporting to the Director of Operations.

Clinical Setting

I Dream Big Academy is a startup charter school inspired by the Big Picture Learning model, emphasizing personalized learning, student agency, and real-world experiences. You will work in a dynamic, innovative educational environment serving middle school students.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert healthcare guidance to students, staff, and families
• Administer first aid in accordance with established procedures
• Implement and oversee preventative health programs, including screenings, immunization efforts, and wellness education
• Develop, plan, and implement student health plans (504 plans, IEPs, food allergy plans, etc.)
• Train school personnel on medication administration, emergency procedures, and early detection of health concerns
• Supervise and train designated personnel in medication administration and operation of healthcare equipment
• Supervise designated licensed personnel in the performance of invasive procedures
• Respond as a first responder to medical situations, offering calm, skilled care
• Maintain accurate health records in compliance with state regulations while protecting student confidentiality
• Assist school administration and staff in developing school health programs
• Aid in the primary prevention and control of communicable diseases
• Instruct teachers on screening students for health problems
• Provide in-service education on health-related topics for school personnel
• Coordinate and implement health screenings mandated by state law
• Coordinate PEEHIP screenings for staff and flu vaccination clinics for students as needed
• Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential health and emotional problems of students
• Serve as liaison between health professionals and the school system regarding student health needs
• Collaborate with educators and administrators to foster a safe and inclusive learning environment
• Work with community agencies to provide improved health services
• Assist school personnel in maintaining environmental standards
• Speak to PTA, parent, civic, and faculty groups as requested
• Recommend exclusion and readmission of students in compliance with Board policy on infections and contagious diseases
• Report suspected child abuse, domestic violence, and neglect to the Mobile County Department of Human Resources
• Serve on school committees, task forces, and representative groups as required
• Maintain and submit reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner
• Respond to inquiries, requests, feedback, concerns, and complaints in a timely and positive manner
• Report potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to appropriate administrative or supervisory personnel
• May visit students' homes when necessary

Required Qualifications

• Valid license from the Alabama Board of Nursing to practice as a registered nurse
• Valid CPR Card
• Verifiable two (2) years of nurse experience in a hospital, school, or community health setting
• Valid Alabama driver's license and access to appropriate and reliable transportation to meet job requirements
• Meet suitability criteria for employment under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
• Knowledge of effective procedures and practice for vision, hearing, and other appropriate health screening activities and programs
• Knowledge of current medical and pediatric nursing practices
• Any other certificate required by state law

• Teaching certification
• Experience in project-based learning, real-world education, or advisory models
• Big Picture Learning experience
• Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and financial information
• Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills
• Effective interpersonal skills with emphasis on communication and collaboration with diverse groups
• Ability to work independently with empathy, demonstrate initiative, prioritize tasks, and perform assignments with accuracy and attention to detail
• Ability to organize and maintain accurate records
• Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, and initiative in dealing with students, parents, school staff, and the public
• Good general health, clean in attire, and professional in appearance
• Ability to be punctual and maintain regular attendance

Compensation

• Salary based on experience according to the Board Approved Salary Scale
