Goucher Charter Academy seeks a School Nurse to provide comprehensive health services to students and staff in a K-12 school setting. Reporting to the Principal, you will manage the school health room, administer first aid and medical assistance, maintain confidential health records, and coordinate health services between the school, families, physicians, and community agencies.
Responsibilities
- Collect and review health cards on all students, noting allergies, medications, illnesses, and health conditions; notify teachers of significant health problems
- Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential health records using the School Health Management Program (SNAP) and PowerSchool software
- Obtain and maintain student immunization records; prepare South Carolina certificates of immunization when appropriate documentation is provided
- Make referrals to physicals and DHEC as necessary; prepare DHEC immunization reports as required
- Manage the school health room; attend to ill and injured students on a walk-in basis and handle medical emergencies
- Notify parents or physicians as necessary in cases requiring medical attention; summon ambulance if necessary
- Participate in school screening programs for vision, hearing, scoliosis, and blood pressure; enter screening results in SNAP; determine if further medical consultation is necessary and make referrals
- Monitor students for health problems including lice infestation, elevated blood sugar levels, and other unmet health needs
- Counsel and educate students about health problems, disease prevention, hygiene, and health maintenance
- Provide health instruction, counseling, and guidance to parents and staff on CPR, first aid, emergency care procedures, and special health problems
- Dispense prescription and non-prescription medications as directed by physician and parent
- Identify conditions indicating communicable diseases; alert faculty, parents, physicians, and public health authorities when necessary
- Assist in identifying and reporting suspected child abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect
- Develop individual health plans for students with disabilities or chronic health conditions
- Identify and monitor students with extended illnesses or absences; correspond with attendance clerk and parent
- Coordinate health and social services for students between school, family physician, hospitals, and community agencies
- Research illnesses and diseases; consult with other nurses and health care professionals to determine appropriate school-based care
- Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations concerning bloodborne pathogens protocol
- Participate in implementing emergency management systems and injury/disease prevention
- May serve as site coordinator for staff wellness programs
- Provide emergency care and first aid to staff as needed; provide medical referrals
- Read employee TB test results and forward to appropriate persons or agencies
- Maintain confidential staff health records for emergency use
- Order and maintain inventory of health room supplies and equipment
- Prepare and distribute first aid kits for field trips and emergency situations
- Prepare and distribute mini-first aid kits for all staff members
- Prepare and maintain equipment and supplies for emergencies
- Compile data and prepare health reports and records required by the school and other agencies
- Review school and state policies and procedures for student nursing; recommend changes as appropriate
- Review Medicaid forms for eligibility; generate monthly Medicaid billing reports
- Interact and communicate with supervisors, school staff, administrators, professional peers, students, parents, physicians, pharmacists, therapists, hospital personnel, health care providers, social service agencies, government agencies, and the general public
- Operate medical instruments and equipment including wheelchair, stethoscope, otoscope, thermometer, nebulizer, audiometer, glucometer, scoliometer, titmus machine, and sphygmomanometer
- Receive and respond to inquiries, concerns, and complaints from staff, parents, medical personnel, and students regarding nursing services
- Assist with school registration events and procedures
- May teach growth and development classes for assigned grades or provide related information to parents
- Assist the administrative team in providing an atmosphere conducive to learning and teaching
- Maintain punctuality and regular attendance
- Plan, organize, and prioritize daily assignments and work activities
- Maintain a clean and orderly work environment
- Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and board policies
- Follow appropriate chain of command procedures
- Present a positive image of the school at all times
- Operate a variety of equipment including computer, printer, two-way radio, telephone, and calculator
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Associate's degree in nursing supplemented by one to two years of nursing experience, preferably in an educational setting, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- Active South Carolina RN license
- Valid state driver's license

Schedule
- 190 days of employment per school year
Working Conditions
- School environment with some exposure to environmental conditions
- Requires ability to work under a degree of stress related to duties requiring constant attention and working with students
- Physical demands include walking or standing and lifting or moving items related to the job on a recurring basis
- Occasional local travel between campuses; overnight travel is typically not required
