As a School Nurse, you will assess the health needs of students and develop comprehensive programs to meet those needs. You will provide direct nursing care, participate in interdisciplinary teams, and work collaboratively with school administrators, health education staff, physical educators, and families to ensure consistent health services across all grade levels.
Responsibilities
- Assess health needs of the student population using demographic, health, and school system data
- Develop program goals, objectives, and action steps based on identified student health needs
- Provide direct nursing care to students as needed
- Participate in developing interdisciplinary plans to identify students in need of services and initiate appropriate interventions
- Collaborate with school administrators to ensure consistent communication and transition of health services across grade levels
- Develop and implement written policies and procedures for clinical services and programs addressing health issues
- Develop and implement documentation systems at both individual student and programmatic levels
- Maintain accurate, cumulative, specific, objective, and confidential health records for each student
- Provide clinical consultation to health education staff, physical educators, administrative and teaching staff, students, and families
- Participate in interdisciplinary teams
- Implement communicable disease prevention and infection control based on current guidelines for universal precautions, prevention of bloodborne pathogen exposure, and hazardous medical waste disposal
- Ensure emergency care plans are in place, communicated to all staff, and coordinated with community emergency care procedures
- Promote positive linkages and referral mechanisms to community providers for child and adolescent health services
- Compile statistical reports as required by the school system and state agencies
- Review changing trends in health needs
- Collaborate with local nursing education institutions
Required Qualifications
- Valid Department of Education certification as a school nurse in Massachusetts
- Minimum baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program
- Minimum three years of experience in school nursing or a related field
- Current CPR certification
- Completion of ongoing continuing education programs pertinent to school health and school nursing practice, and meeting continuing education requirements for certification and licensure in Massachusetts

You will report to the School Nurse Leader and Building Principal.
