Edgewood Elementary School seeks a School Nurse to maximize student potential by promoting optimum health through the delivery and management of a comprehensive school health services program.
Clinical Setting
This is a ten-month position within a school-based health services program serving elementary students.
Responsibilities
- Manage the comprehensive health services program and health information system as assigned
- Provide direct care for student injuries and acute illness utilizing the nursing process
- Administer medications and health care treatments; instruct and direct school staff in care when legally appropriate based on the Maryland Nurse Practice Act
- Provide emergency care for ill and injured students and refer them to appropriate medical care; instruct and direct school staff in implementing emergency action plans for students with chronic health concerns
- Develop plans of care for students with chronic health conditions; provide case management and utilize interdisciplinary collaborating skills
- Communicate with school staff regarding student health problems that may affect learning and behavior
- Supervise, direct, and assist in the evaluation of Team Nurses or part-time nurses in the interpretation and administration of health services functions
- Supervise and assist in the evaluation of support staff delegated to assist in student care, including toileting needs, transfers, and emergency protocols
- Provide instruction, training, and direction of health care needs for field trips and school-sponsored activities; consult with the Nurse Coordinator when needs require additional nursing support
- Participate in long-term management of students with special care needs, including creation and implementation of individualized healthcare plans
- Comply with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations; deliver care in an ethical, confidential, and culturally sensitive manner
- Maintain, interpret, and evaluate cumulative health records; utilize the school system computer program to document care
- Ensure compliance with state health mandates including immunizations, lead screening, and physical examinations; submit required reports to the school district, county, and state
- Reduce health-related absenteeism and assist in promoting desirable student attendance practices
- Identify health barriers to student achievement and collaborate with staff and families to address them
- Provide secondary prevention strategies such as vision and hearing screenings and health referrals
- Promote a safe and orderly school environment; act as a resource to the principal, school staff, and families on health issues
- Develop and implement plans to control the spread of communicable disease; ensure appropriate exclusion for infectious illnesses and report communicable diseases as required by law
- Instruct and direct staff in standard precautions
- Assess community health needs and provide primary prevention strategies including health counseling and health education to students and the school community
- Serve as a liaison between school staff, families and caregivers, healthcare professionals, and the community
- Obtain special reports from medical sources and interpret findings to school personnel as needed
- Serve as the health expert on student services, 504, and IEP teams; train and direct staff care related to health accommodations
- Provide professional development to staff and ensure understanding and return demonstrations as mandated
- Provide health resources and direction as a member of the school's Wellness Team; participate in staff wellness activities in collaboration with the Benefits department
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or a related field (required for all nurses hired after July 1, 2017)
- Valid license from the Maryland State Board of Nursing as a Registered Nurse (RN)
- Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association (BLS for Health Care Providers) or the American Red Cross (CPR for the Professional Rescuer)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to effectively communicate with students, school staff, and families and caregivers
- Proficient in the use of computer technology including Microsoft Office Suite software programs
- Ability to perform physical activities such as walking, standing, lifting, and transfer up to 40 pounds in addition to operation of medical equipment and instruments
- Ability to travel throughout the county
- Willingness to work beyond normally scheduled hours with little or no advanced notice (exempt employee)
Preferred Qualifications
- At least two years of experience in school nursing, community health nursing, or a related field
Compensation and Benefits
This is a ten-month position. Salary range based on the FY 2026-2027 Salary Schedule for School Nurses: Starting Salary $60,574 – Maximum Earnings Potential $79,926.
