The opportunity

Job Description

The School Nurse serves as a key member of the educational team, assessing the health needs of students and implementing individual health care plans directed by physicians. This position monitors student health care plans incorporating input from parents, guardians, and physicians while ensuring all health care practices comply with applicable laws. The School Nurse provides appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and injured students with proper parental or guardian consent, serves as a health care resource to staff, conducts mandated health screenings, and identifies health issues for referral to appropriate treatment and follow-up.

Responsibilities

  • Administer first aid, medication, and specialized medical treatments such as oral suctioning and catheterization for ill, medically fragile, or injured students
  • Conduct mandated screenings including vision, dental, hearing, and back/scoliosis screenings
  • Assess situations involving student safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug-related, etc.), and other health-related issues to identify problems and ensure compliance with legal requirements
  • Collaborate with parents, guardians, health care providers, and public agencies to promote and secure student health services, advise on changes in student health status, and recommend medical intervention
  • Develop individual student care plans addressing health needs and providing direction to site personnel
  • Implement health care plans for students with chronic health problems and accommodation requirements
  • Monitor students referred for illness or injury to attend to immediate health care needs and initiate follow-up care
  • Maintain confidential student files and records including health care plans, agency referrals, and accident reports
  • Conduct age-appropriate health education programs and activities in conjunction with classroom curriculum
  • Conduct site assessments to identify health issues, emergency preparedness concerns, and safety or accessibility recommendations
  • Provide training on health-related subjects including CPR, disaster preparedness, child abuse, medication management, substance abuse, food allergies, and hygiene
  • Refer students requiring additional medical attention for required follow-up treatment and services
  • Report health and safety issues to assigned administrators and appropriate agencies including suspected abuse, contagious diseases, and other concerns
  • Respond to emergency medical situations such as severe falls, prescription reactions, and bleeding
  • Research health and medical topics to provide information to staff, students, parents, and the public
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, seminars, and interdisciplinary teams to share information on student health needs and service delivery
  • Transport health-related supplies and equipment to school sites as needed

Schedule and Employment

  • 250-day contract with benefits
  • FTE 0.5 to 1.0
  • Available ASAP

Compensation

  • Hourly rate: $34.26 to $45.29

  • Bachelor's degree in a nursing-related field with an emphasis in Nursing, OR
  • Associate degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university plus two years of work experience as a registered nurse
