School Health Nurse Practitioner, Bureau of School Health

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of School Health, seeks a School Health Nurse Practitioner to provide clinical services to high school students. Working under the administrative supervision of the High School Nursing Director with clinical collaboration from the High School Medical leadership team, you will deliver comprehensive adolescent medical care in accordance with standard practice.

You will work within the mandates, policies, and protocols of the Office of School Health, with particular focus on the Connecting Adolescents to Comprehensive Health Care (CATCH) Program. This role offers the opportunity to make a direct impact on the health and wellness of New York City high school students through clinical care, health education, and preventive services.

Clinical Setting

You will provide services across high school locations in New York City, working in school-based medical rooms as part of a clinical team.

Responsibilities

• Provide a full range of sexual and reproductive health services including pregnancy tests, contraception, counseling, and education
• Perform physical examinations for sports clearances, working papers, and new admission requirements
• Independently examine patients, formulate diagnoses, direct or perform appropriate therapeutic treatment, and counsel patients on care and treatment recommendations
• Improve the health of school children through case management of chronic disease, preventive health screening and counseling, health education, and referrals
• Maintain adequate student health records using the Automated Student Health Record (ASHR)
• Support the development of school educational and prevention programs promoting health and wellness for all students
• Provide trainings and presentations to school staff, community organizations, and parents
• Assist in administration of staff training and orientation for new CATCH nurses
• Provide clinical nursing assistance for students as indicated
• Serve in a leadership role with Office of School Health staff in medical rooms
• Participate in Office of School Health research and quality improvement activities
• Participate in all mandated Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Office of School Health trainings and professional development sessions
• Provide clinical assistance in the event of environmental or communicable disease occurrences
• Assist with developing nursing clinical policies and practices around reproductive health services
• Stay abreast of policy statements, research, and medical advances in the health community

Required Qualifications

• Valid New York State license as a Registered Nurse
• Valid New York State Nurse Practitioner license (Pediatric or Family)
• Baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited college
• Master's degree in Nursing, Public Health, or a related field
• Four years of recent experience in public health or hospital nursing or a related field
• At least 18 months of specialized experience in an administrative, managerial, executive, consultative, or educational capacity, or in supervision of professional public health nursing personnel
• Minimum of 3,600 hours of licensed Nurse Practitioner experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Clinical experience in family planning and adolescent health
• Knowledge of current family planning standards of practice
• Familiarity with best practices in working with adolescents
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Computer skills in Microsoft Office
• Experience with Electronic Medical Records
• Ability to maintain good public relations and communicate effectively with students, clinical providers, school staff, and parents
• Sensitivity and flexibility when working with groups of various backgrounds
• Ability to travel to various school locations across New York City

Licenses and Certifications

All candidates must possess and maintain a valid New York State license as a Registered Nurse and a valid New York State Nurse Practitioner license for the duration of employment. These licenses must be maintained throughout your employment.

Additional Requirements

• Must follow all safety, security, bloodborne pathogen exposure, infection control, and hazardous materials policies and procedures
• Must use personal protective equipment, maintain good hand hygiene, and adhere to sharps safety procedures
• Ability to travel to various school locations across New York City

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range: $68,214.00 – $124,213.00
