Job Description

Helen Keller Services is seeking a Full-Time Registered Nurse for the Children's Learning Center in Islandia, NY. You will be responsible for assuring the health and safety of approximately 60 special education preschoolers who are blind, have low vision, multiple disabilities, autism, Down syndrome, or pervasive developmental delays.

Responsibilities

  • Assess students daily for illness, injury, and health concerns and maintain daily student logs in accordance with OCFS Licensure and NY State Guidance
  • Provide care including minor first aid and medication administration as authorized
  • Follow NY State guidelines to determine when children are not permitted in the building due to illness in accordance with school policies and health guidelines
  • Monitor students with chronic health conditions and implement individualized health care plans
  • Review and assess all medical documentation of new and continuing students for completion and compliance with regulatory agencies of New York
  • Manage treatments and medications for students as prescribed by medical professionals with prior written authorization
  • Ensure all medical documentation complies with OCFS regulations and school policies
  • Monitor immunization records, physical examinations, medication authorizations, and other required health documentation
  • Maintain confidentiality of student health information in accordance with applicable laws and regulations
  • Advise parents, school principal, social worker, or other appropriate health professionals when a student might need a more specialized level of care
  • Conduct formal in-person assessments of each child and dialogue with students' parents, building administrators, and other medical professionals to determine appropriate classroom placement and health care support needs
  • Disseminate communication as needed related to OCFS and communicable diseases through appropriate platforms and email
  • Maintain current New York State certification and licensure by staying current with pediatric medical research through continuing education
  • Expand skills and knowledge to meet the growing needs of students with complex and chronic health conditions
  • Attend ongoing professional development workshops and seminars
  • Provide trainings to Children's Learning Center staff as needed
  • Participate and contribute to monthly team meetings and all full staff meetings
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and contribute to the upkeep of personal and shared work spaces
  • Collect, analyze, and synthesize comprehensive data pertinent to students' health to ensure the highest quality of health and educational services
  • Travel quarterly to other school facilities within the HKS Children's Learning Center network for internal audits
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Principal or members of HKSB Administration

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing
  • Valid and current New York State RN license
  • Strong technical skills including MS Office, Outlook, and school-related applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a school setting, particularly with OCFS experience
