School-Based Nurse Practitioner (Clay Co.)

This position is a School-Based Nurse Practitioner role located in Clay County, working in an ambulatory health setting under the general supervision of the Director of Medical Operations. You will examine and treat students for chronic and acute episodic illnesses, minor injuries, and other health concerns. You will perform selected laboratory testing, write prescriptions, perform office procedures within your scope of practice, and refer to physicians as needed.

Responsibilities

• See ambulatory patients for examination, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic and acute episodic illnesses and minor injuries
• Review patient records to determine health status and take patient histories
• Perform physical examinations including developmental screening examinations on children and Pap tests
• Record pertinent patient data and prepare patient summaries
• Make clinical decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate management and treatment for initial and follow-up evaluations
• Initiate requests for commonly performed laboratory studies and collect specimens for blood, urine, and stool analyses and cultures
• Identify normal and abnormal findings in history, physical examination, and laboratory studies
• Initiate appropriate evaluation and emergency management for emergency situations such as cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, injuries, burns, and hemorrhages
• Perform clinical procedures including venipuncture, electrocardiograms, care and suturing of minor lacerations, casting and splinting, control of external hemorrhage, application of dressings and bandages, removal of superficial foreign bodies, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, audiometry screening, and visual screening
• Carry out aseptic and isolation techniques
• Provide counseling and instruction regarding common patient problems, limitations, and abilities
• Execute documents at the direction of the supervising physician
• Review medical data forms from outside medical providers and facilities
• Prepare patient discharge summaries when directly involved in patient care
• Assist in surgical procedures under physician supervision
• Schedule follow-up visits as needed
• Assist the physician in learning and becoming proficient in new procedures
• Serve as a staff in-service resource
• Maintain accurate patient records and submit timely patient visits for billing purposes
• Assist patients, family members, and other clients with concern and empathy while respecting confidentiality and privacy
• Answer and refer telephone calls and inquiries to ensure accurate and timely communications
• Assist in the orientation and training of new team members
• Work in a positive and cooperative manner with fellow team members
• Assist other team members in the performance of their assignments
• Seek out opportunities to help rather than waiting to be asked
• Demonstrate flexibility to perform duties wherever volume deems it necessary
• Demonstrate sound judgment regarding questionable findings or concerns
• Investigate and follow through on unusual orders or requests
• Follow proper reporting procedures for actual or potential accidents and incidents
• Record and report the need for service maintenance or repair of equipment
• Consistently evaluate work and determine if further steps are needed to meet patient expectations
• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards
• Respond to changing situations in a flexible manner and reprioritize work as necessary
• Minimize non-productive time and fill slow periods with activities that prepare for future needs
• Organize job functions and work areas to complete varied assignments within established time frames
• Take initiative to make decisions without direct supervision
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all policies and procedures
• Comply with infection control policies and procedures, including Body Substance Isolation and the Exposure Control Plan
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Medical Operations

Required Qualifications

• Successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program
• Currently approved by the joint Board of Medical Examiners and Board of Nursing to perform medical acts
• Currently licensed as a registered nurse in the state
• Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executive management, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, support staff, other departments, and patients and families
• Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment and handle multiple and challenging priorities
• Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities as related to various aspects of patient care
• Good clinical judgment

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree
• Experience in counseling and teaching
• Minimum of one year's experience in related nursing positions

Physical Requirements

• Able to lift 100 pounds if necessary to assist fallen patients
• Able to lift 10 pounds for routine performance of essential functions
• May be exposed to adverse indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, bloodborne pathogens, physical hazards such as needle pricks, and chemical hazards
