This position is a School-Based Nurse Practitioner role located in Braxton County, providing ambulatory healthcare services in a school setting. Under the general supervision of the Director of Medical Operations, you will examine and treat students for chronic and acute episodic illnesses, minor injuries, and accidents. You will perform clinical assessments, selected laboratory testing, office procedures, write prescriptions, and refer to physicians as needed, all within your scope of practice and available equipment.
Responsibilities
- See ambulatory patients for examination, diagnosis, and treatment of chronic and acute episodic illnesses and minor injuries
- Review patient records to determine health status and take patient histories
- Perform physical examinations, including developmental screening examinations on children and Pap tests
- Record pertinent patient data and prepare patient summaries
- Make clinical decisions regarding data gathering and appropriate management and treatment for initial and follow-up evaluations
- Initiate requests for commonly performed laboratory studies and collect specimens for blood, urine, stool analyses, and cultures
- Identify normal and abnormal findings in history, physical examination, and laboratory studies
- Initiate appropriate evaluation and emergency management for emergency situations including cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, injuries, burns, and hemorrhages
- Perform clinical procedures including venipuncture, electrocardiograms, care and suturing of minor lacerations, casting and splinting, control of external hemorrhage, application of dressings and bandages, removal of superficial foreign bodies, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, audiometry screening, and visual screening
- Carry out aseptic and isolation techniques
- Provide counseling and instruction regarding common patient problems, limitations, and abilities
- Execute documents at the direction of the supervising physician
- Review medical data forms from outside medical providers and facilities
- Prepare patient discharge summaries when directly involved in patient care
- Assist in surgical procedures under physician supervision
- Schedule follow-up visits as needed
- Maintain accurate patient records and submit timely patient visits for billing purposes
- Assist in orientation and training of new team members
- Serve as a staff in-service resource
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Medical Operations
Required Qualifications
- Successful completion of an approved nurse practitioner program
- Currently approved by the joint Board of Medical Examiners and Board of Nursing to perform medical acts
- Currently licensed as a registered nurse in West Virginia
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with management, physicians, non-physician providers, support staff, other departments, and patients and families
- Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment and handle multiple and challenging priorities
- Critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities related to various aspects of patient care
- Good clinical judgment
- Ability to lift 10 pounds for routine performance of essential functions and 100 pounds if necessary to assist fallen patients
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree
- Minimum one year of experience in related nursing positions
- Experience in counseling and teaching
