Job Description

West Penn Hospital's Operating Room Department is seeking a full-time Registered Nurse to join a 17-room surgical suite serving diverse specialties including robotics, general surgery, bariatrics, women's health, and oncology. This position offers the opportunity to develop comprehensive perioperative nursing skills across all surgical services in a Magnet-recognized facility.

Position Overview

This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week. You will participate in the on-call rotation with a 30-minute call response time requirement when scheduled for call.

Clinical Setting

West Penn Hospital is a four-time Magnet-recognized facility with private patient rooms and national recognition for burn care and OB-GYN services. The OR Department operates 17 rooms and supports a wide variety of surgical specialties.

Role and Responsibilities

As an OR nurse, you will be trained to both scrub and circulate, providing coverage across all surgical services. Unlike departments with dedicated service-line assignments, OR nurses function as a comprehensive perioperative team supporting a broad range of specialties and procedures.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assess human responses and plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for patients and families
  • Provide transformational leadership in a professional practice setting
  • Function as a team player, helping colleagues succeed through role modeling and mentoring
  • Assign or delegate tasks based on patient needs and staff skill levels
  • Maintain a safe environment considering patient condition, intervention complexity, and outcome predictability
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to peers regarding clinical practice and role performance
  • Share knowledge and skills with colleagues, cultivating a work environment that promotes positive attitudes, effective communication, trust, and collaboration
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to evaluate clinical care and health services
  • Promote patient safety initiatives and participate in department-specific quality initiatives
  • Supervise and evaluate assigned LPN scope of practice as appropriate
  • Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, evaluate, and implement individualized patient care plans
  • Derive culturally and age-appropriate expected outcomes involving patients, families, and other healthcare providers
  • Analyze health status and compare data with norms to determine patient care needs
  • Assess and report patient condition changes to physicians and supervisors, intervening appropriately and documenting accordingly
  • Accept assignments in areas outside your primary unit and perform duties within individualized competency
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous lifelong learning and professional development
  • Participate in systematic peer review and obtain informal feedback from patients, peers, and colleagues
  • Meet time and attendance guidelines per hospital policy
  • Place patients at the center of care by evaluating patient and family satisfaction and serving as an advocate
  • Participate in department-specific patient satisfaction initiatives
  • Promote compassionate, patient and family-centered communication
  • Assess for and attempt to resolve patient and family concerns
  • Utilize effective time management to complete assigned duties within established work shifts

Orientation and Training

The orientation period is approximately six months to ensure successful transition into the role. Nurses without prior procedural or operating room experience will be enrolled in AHN's Periop 101 program, a comprehensive training course designed to build foundational perioperative nursing knowledge and skills.

Schedule and Shifts

Available shifts include:

  • 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM
  • 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
  • 11:00 AM to 11:00 PM

Required Qualifications

  • Current State of Pennsylvania RN licensure OR current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • CPR certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in Operating Room Nursing (CNOR)
