Registered Professional Nurse III, Ka'u Hospital

Registered Professional Nurse III at Ka'u Hospital is responsible for independently developing and implementing nursing care plans for patients in both emergency room and long-term care settings. This is a Critical Access Hospital and long-term care facility serving the East Hawaii region. The RPN III provides skilled nursing care, treatment, and educational services; may assign and direct the work of lower-level registered nurses and nursing assistants; and may serve as charge nurse of a patient care unit on an assigned shift.

Clinical Setting

Ka'u Hospital is a Critical Access Hospital and long-term care facility. You will work in both the emergency room and long-term care units, providing 24/7 services. The facility is part of the East Hawaii Region of Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.

Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care for long-term care residents, ensuring physical and psychosocial needs are met, including education and discharge planning
• Work shifts in the Emergency Room as needed, assisting with urgent assessments, procedures, and emergency interventions in accordance with hospital policies
• Perform and document nursing procedures, tests, and medication administration in accordance with physician orders and facility policies
• Adhere to infection control and safety standards, maintain equipment readiness, and comply with hospital regulations and documentation requirements
• Coordinate with interdisciplinary teams, provide detailed shift reports, and maintain open communication with residents, families, and healthcare staff
• Participate in staff meetings, training, and quality improvement initiatives
• Assign and direct the work of lower-level registered nurses and nursing assistants as appropriate
• Serve as charge nurse of a patient care unit on an assigned shift as needed

Required Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing
• One-half (1/2) year of professional nursing work experience, where you independently provided nursing care to patients in a clinic, hospital, or institution
• Valid State of Hawaii Registered Nurse license (evidence of licensure required with application)
• Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child, and infant) certification required within one month after employment

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in nursing from an accredited program
• Two to three years of professional nursing experience in an acute critical care hospital department (Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit)

Employment Options

Multiple FTE positions are available:

• 90% FTE with benefits (36 hours per week)
• 30% FTE without benefits (12 hours per week)
• 10% FTE casual hire without benefits (scheduled as needed)

Schedule

Must be available to work shifts, weekends, and holidays as necessary based on hospital operations. Services are provided 24/7.

Note: Rates for paid holidays, vacation, and sick days are for 1.0 FTE positions assigned to 8-hour shifts. Accruals for these benefits are prorated based on FTE.

Pre-Employment Requirements

Offers of employment are contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as tuberculosis (TB) screening. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers is borne by Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
