Michigan Medicine's University Hospital Operating Room is hiring four full-time Registered Nurses for a six-month operating room internship program. This educational program provides graduate nurses and registered nurses with comprehensive training in perioperative nursing through classroom instruction, laboratory work, and direct patient care in the operating room setting.
The internship prepares nurses for their role as perioperative nurses by teaching a wide range of skills and knowledge specific to the operating room environment. You will work with non-responsive patient populations in a fast-paced surgical setting.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the six-month operating room orientation program
- Develop perioperative nursing skills and knowledge through classroom, laboratory, and patient care settings
- Provide patient care in the operating room under supervision
- Fulfill call and weekend/holiday obligations
Schedule
- 40 hours per week
- Day and evening shift rotation
- Call commitment with 30-minute response time
- Weekend and holiday obligations
- Anticipated start date: January 2027
Required Qualifications
- Current Michigan RN license (for candidates who have passed the NCLEX)
- Graduate Nurse (GN) applicants are considered; selected GN candidates must pass the NCLEX for Michigan RN licensure within 45 days of hire
- Call commitment with 30-minute response time
- All required qualifications must be met prior to the start date of employment
- Resume required for all applicants
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Operating room experience
- Satisfactory attendance record proven by employment references
- Ability to work with non-responsive patient populations
- Demonstrated ability to handle stress, conflict, and resolution
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team member
Additional Requirements
- All applicants selected to interview must complete a half-day unpaid observation in the UH-OR
- This internship requires a two-year commitment to working in the University Hospital Operating Room
- Background screening and pre-employment drug testing required upon acceptance of contingent job offer
- Position is onsite only
Compensation and Benefits
- Hourly range for Registered Nurses: $43.46 - $67.40 per hour
- Evening shift differential: $3.00 per hour
- Night shift differential: $4.00 per hour
- Day shift weekend differential: $2.90 per hour
- Evening shift weekend differential: $5.90 per hour
- Night shift weekend differential: $6.90 per hour
- Charge nurse differential: $1.00 per hour
